    the think I've learned in my career is that there are always a million things going on at once. it can't be reduced to "hopeful/hopeless" or "things are getting better/things are getting worse." no matter how bad things are getting, SOME things are getting better. SOME things are, right now, the best they've ever been.

    people will use that fact to deflect from the things getting worse, or paint a false equivalence, or act as though it's always been this same mix of good and bad, and I find all that tedious and exhausting. we are facing a number of historically unique problems that have the potential to be very dire and most of our experience is inadequate to prepare us for it. they are not being handled effectively and shit is bad.

    and also: some things, even some closely-related things, are showing genuine promise, and people are fighting like hell, and some of them are brilliant, and amazing things are still possible. and that gives me hope.

    that progress is worth looking at, not because it convinces you everything is fine, but because, if a solution is coming, that's where it's coming from. there is incredible energy in climate activism, leftist organizing, antiracism, queer culture, and all the rest. it's amazing.

    I'm confused why everyone thinks Project 2025 is a totalitarian government. like, it's BAD, but it's almost entirely stuff we already knew R's were working towards. bunch of it was the law in the 50's; hell, a lot of it used to be Democratic policy.

    it's not, like, suspending the constitution, ending elections, dissolving Congress, and instituting martial law. half of it the Dems would probably keep when they're back in power.

    ooh, "dish" is a good word. someone asked me my favorite food at a party the other day and I said "samosas," but samosas are more of an appetizer than a dish, so this sends me back to the drawing board! I'ma be basic and say pizza, high rise crust, with fresh basil and sundried tomatoes*.

    I have been to plenty of places that brag about their "vegan options" and it turns out to be a salad or something. recently it was a burger place that butter-grills all their buns, so to get a veggie burger you have to request an ungrilled bun, but their buns are VERY soft so they get extremely soggy when touching condiments. not eating there again.

    uh... I am working on something of uncertain length. I don't WANT it to become a long-ass video, but it has the potential to become a long-ass video. there is a VERY long-ass ARPB coming when I get through the shorts, but that is taking a long time.

    *my hatred of tomatoes is largely about texture and viscosity; sundried tomatoes, ketchup, marinara, etc. are all transformative in ways that make them tasty

  50. (DA) I've had the thought that they might have pivoted from the "revolution against the High Table" idea teased at the end of Chapter 3 to save it for the "endgame" of the franchise. Not necessarily bringing John back to life, but in a "Ballerina" sequel (if that's a hit), or a Caine movie or whatever else they come up with.

    it's a spectrum. I think eating dairy is a lot less unethical than eating beef. I don't know that any consumption can be fully free of ethical concerns - maybe if you foraged an unfertilized chicken egg in the woods or something, but you could hardly rely on that for omelettes. everybody has to draw their line someplace; heck knows my vegan lifestyle is full of ethical compromises. I genuinely think eating meat every day and also volunteering with an animal rights group does more net good for animals than my veganism. so, with where *I* draw my lines, I can't see any way to ethically eat animal products in any consistent way. that line is not necessarily drawn in an objectively correct place, nor without contradictions and compromises. I'm just a guy doing his best.

    I mean... I don't think "historians" have consensus on what was or wasn't genocide thirty years ago. like... Chinese historians will probably not recognize the genocide of the Uyghurs. I've always taken issue with the idea that "history will judge." history isn't some ultimate truth humanity always comes around to in time. it is written by the victors. things stay disputed for centuries.

    I will not be surprised if America still does not recognize the genocide it funded. who does and doesn't recognize it will be telling, but it will be recognized in much of the world. it already is.

To seriously engage with the authorial layers of neon gun movie, I personally disagree with that reading, because the story still very much has the pseudo anarchist through line of “hierarchy bad, hierarchy’s rules only exist to violently preserve hierarchy”, it just dropped one plot point that tied into that theme in a way it is, bluntly, too stupid to explore, and then added an entire third protagonist (The Tracker) to carry on that theme.

    valid points. I still think John's ultimate "victory" coming by finding a way to redemption by rejoining the power structure and playing by their arcane rules (even subversively) is a soft betrayal of the previous three movies, which more or less rejected the idea that the rules of the high table could EVER lead to justice, and that their yoke must be thrown off entirely. but you've given me more to think about. on my next rewatch.

    yes! it prompted some thoughts about how throwback shooters are starting to throw back to the mid-00's and whether those games are "boomer shooters" or if that term only applies to pre-Half-Life design, and does that disqualify something like Ultrakill that has a lot of Quake in it but also a lot of Tribes 2/F.E.A.R., and is trying to codify "boomer shooter" beneficial in any way or just gatekeeping?
