Should we talk more openly more often about depression and suicidal thoughts?

    Ian replied:

depression, yes. suicidal ideation is tricky - it's one of those things where, hearing about it, people who are prone to suicidal ideation but are not currently experiencing it can get their brain pointed in that direction and start having suicidal thoughts of their own. it's worth talking about, but it has to be discussed carefully and probably with a lot of content warnings. so, basically, not on Twitter.

What do you think of essentially making private ownership illegal, but having high-security public gun ranges with almost every weapon you can think of, so that people like myself, who think that guns look and sound cool but still know and want extreme gun control, can still have our weird little fun, and as a sort of compromise between gun haters and gun control

in response to Do you think the US should make firearms illegal? Would it cause a "civil war" or something?

    Ian replied:

that would be fun for you, but the majority of people who want guns want them because they live in fear of other Americans (primarily the Black and brown ones) and want guns so they can "protect" themselves from imagined threats/fantasize about a breakdown of society where they get to kill with impunity. no amount of statistics saying "the odds of someone getting hurt from the gun in your house is much higher than the odds of getting hurt by a criminal" will dissuade them of that.

    Ian replied:

In my heart of hearts, yes, I think the US should stop producing and selling firearms. But I don't think that's feasible and it's clear from a lot of other countries that you can have an armed society without rampant gun violence through a few sensible regulations and some cultural shifts. So, if only out of sheer pragmatism, I'd rather we put our energy into that.

If you’re white, should you go out of your way to make friends with bipoc?

    Ian replied:

I think that's a weird and incidentally tokenizing way to think about it. Instead, I would back up and ask: WHY are BIPOC out of my way? What about the way I'm living my life makes it so I'd have to put in legwork to know BIPOC people? Are they logistical choices? Unconscious biases? Have I turned down opportunities to be friends with BIPOC and not realized it? Have my jobs been mostly full of white co-workers? If so, should I be pushing management to address that? Have I mostly been living in white neighborhoods? If so, is that because I'm uncomfortable with not being the majority?

I feel, the more you try to live as an anti-racist, the more incidental contact you find yourself having, under which friendships can occur naturally. Not having BIPOC friends is usually a symptom.

(different anon) I would argue that an election really should be a process to ensure that the voices of as many people as possible are represented in the policies put forward by a government, and that the competition between ideologies should be incidental to this purpose.

However, I also recognize that this is a less feasible idea in countries like the US, where democracy is a zero-sum game.

in response to In the context of a relationship, If I were to consistently misrepresent my wants as more extreme then they are in order to make what I want seem more acceptable and "compromise" down to it - would that be abusive behavior?

If you had to explain why capitalism is bad to every 18 year old in the US what would you say?

in response to If you could teach something about politics to every 18 year old in the US, what would it be?

    Ian replied:

that's not something I can easily do within CuriousCat's character limit. by the time I get to these kids, they've already been living under capitalism for 18 years; it's just The Way Things Are. reframing and recontextualizing that takes a lot of care.

but the two most likely angles would be:

    a) explain that we have all the knowledge, technology, and willpower to avert climate catastrophe *right now*, and the thing standing in the way is wealthy corporations that would make less profit if we abandoned fossil fuels. not even *lose money*, just *make money at a somewhat reduced rate.* even the most aggressive climate proposals reign in the corporate regulations because they don't think corporations will follow them and because our entire economy depends on wealthy industries staying wealthy, so we hold hands and pray they consent to milder restrictions and hope someone invents carbon capture. so, in no uncertain terms, if the human race goes extinct, it will be capitalism that killed us.

    b) explain the difference between *making money* and *making profit*, and how capitalism essentially says your time and labor have no intrinsic value, and how all profit is value extraction, and how capitalism is built on every single part of the economy being in competition with every other part, and yet the most amazing things we've accomplished as species were done via cooperation. I feel like people go a long time without understanding that "capitalism" is not just a synonym for "market."

why does the makeup of 'breadtube' seem to be so predominantly white?

    Ian replied:

    a) for the same reasons YouTube as a whole is predominantly white, and most other capitalist systems for that matter: because white people are the most rewarded for their efforts and face the least resistance, so they tend to rise faster. we also are the least likely to get harassed off a platform.

    b) talking about our experiences and opinions is less likely to be "controversial," so The Algorithm likes us.

    c) "breadtube" is term created by fans, so who the term gets applied to is informed by their own unconscious biases. POC who talk about the same things as white lefties are more likely to be read as talking about identity politics than leftism, and not get categorized the same way. I rarely see Kat Blaque or Jay Smooth included listed as breadtubers.

When creating videos, do you have a target audience in mind? Do you go "this one is for the libs, this one is for the leftists" like Santa making his list?

    Ian replied:

Not exactly? When I make political videos I tend to make the kinds of things I wish I'd seen when I was watching the Alt-Right form and didn't know what to do about it. So that's generally assuming a lefty perspective while assuming the audience is a bit less lefty than I am. But there are conscious affordances I make to different populations - I intentionally avoid most jargon terminology because not everyone's had the same education as me; I use inclusive language because not everyone's in the same demographics as me; and, while I never target my videos to the Right, I am aware they may be watching it and, whenever it doesn't weaken the argument, I try to preempt some of their arguments and avoid phrasings that make them unwilling to listen.

Honestly, it's the media-oriented stuff where I make the most decisions about audience. Like, how much can I assume the audience knows about [X]? If I'm talking about narrative theory, do I assume they know about Death of the Author? If I'm talking about movies, do I assume know what "shot-reverse shot" means? If I'm talking about games, do I assume they know about the console crash of the mid-80s? It feels important not to assume anything when I'm talking about how fascism operates, but less so when I'm talking about the history of adventure games, so I'm a bit more willing to just assume people know the boring stuff and not get bogged down. It's not the end of the world if my video about genre sends a few people to Google.

in response to What suggestions do you have for making the "Defund the Police" movement more palatable to non-leftists and seizing control of the narrative away from conservatives?

    Ian replied:

there's just too many variables here. we imagine protestors go hard for abolition: how does the democratic establishment respond? how do the republicans respond? how do the various white nationalist militias respond? is there violence? does it widen the rift between progressive and centrist dems? if so, which side ends up with more institutional power? does the conversation shift enough that establishment dems have to worry about getting primaried if they don't support it? how many support it during the elections but then quietly drop it once they take office? how much of the public notices? how sustained is the protest? does the gop double down on funding the police, or do they get less vocal about their positions? does that lose them support among the militias? does the next trump show up to loudly proclaim that cops should have MORE freedom to murder black people? does this capitalize on the white nationalist/militia/qanon vote? is that enough to lead them to victory, or does it do what we thought would happen with trump and tank their campaign, delegitimize those positions, and send republicans scrambling to distance themselves?

I don't have enough information or foresight to answer this question. all I know is fighting for abolition is the right thing to do, and what dems are doing instead isn't working.

An idea that often pops up on leftist twitter is that because breadtubers make money off their videos, their political ideas have to be mainstream in order to get revenue, meaning that all breatubers are/will become neolib, Now, I disagree with that idea (plus Philosophy Tube already discussed this in his video on Daddy Musk), but I want to ask: do you care when people accuse you of being a "liberal" (whatever that word means these days)?

    Ian replied:

how much I care depends on who says it, but, yeah, it bothers me. that's the kind of argument that looks at the ecosystem around my work and says "this guy must be liberal" without engaging with the things I'm actually saying. they've already decided I'm a lib and their argument is a post hoc explanation for why. and, what engagement with the work itself there is, is typically shallow. they hear me talk about about gun reform, and, rather than acknowledge that there is a pretty wide plurality of opinions on guns among leftists, they go "libs talk about gun reform, therefore Innuendo Studios is lib." it's so focused on political signifiers and so empty of actual political engagement. I have argued capitalism is continuous with fascism and the only way to defeat it is with progressive leftism, but that's apparently far less important than whether I stanned hard enough for Bernie, *even though I voted for him in two primaries*. (and now I get to watch those same Sanders stans say electoralism is capitalist capitulation.)

given how hard I work on the actual content of my work, seeing it ignored so they can scrutinize whether I have the right affect, especially by people who are (theoretically) on the same side as me, bums me the fuck out.

You say you did community theatre. Favorite musical roles you’ve played?

    Ian replied:

I guess playing The Scarecrow in a kids production of Wizard of Oz. The only musical I was in post-puberty was Mark Twain's The Diary of Adam and Eve, where I played Adam. My dad wanted me to play Hero in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, but it was gonna overlap with rehearsals for Orphans and I didn't wanna be juggling a musical with a drama.

I only just started watching competitive smash, so uhhhh why do people hate Hungry Box I've seen some of his vids but he doesn't really seem better or worse than any of the other 5 Gods in yes of a reason to hate him

Is it just puff? Idk why that'd be the case, you'd think people would hate fox more because you see it constantly

    Ian replied:

Oh no, the Melee community LOVES Fox. They complain about Smash Sisters exhibitions because there aren't enough space animals. They want fast, aggressive, rushdown play, and they hate Puff because a) she's a slow, defensive character, and b) because she makes Foxes play slow and defensive as well. Fox can play in-your-face, but can also run to the opposite side of the stage and spam lasers, which is an optimal strategy against Puff. But Smash fans don't like to see a floatie on one side of the stage trying to bait an approach and a spacie on the other just shooting lasers until it's time to run in and up-smash.

(Granted, that's the wrong way to play a spacie against Puff and, when approached right, i.e. Armada vs. Hungrybox at EVO 2015, there is a nailbiting tension that just doesn't exist in the spacie ditto.)

But why the hate on HBox in specific? Honestly? I think it's just because Mango talked shit about him, and the community loves Mango.

Does equal and non discriminatory payment of wages to all genders and providing equal and sufficient shelter, money, access to food, water and essential resources to all genders the most effective way to drastically reduce sexual harassment/abuse to vulnerable people?

    Ian replied:

I don't know about "most" but it would go a long way. There are also cultural changes that'd have to happen, and, while culture often stems from material conditions, they are not the same thing and culture has its own agenda. But abuse and harassment happen when one party has more power than the other, and equalizing that power is a big part of curbing it.

in response to Can you not see how one could easily twist a belief that "everyone is unconsciously racist" into an excuse to BE racist without remorse?

    Ian replied:

    Maybe, if you're a narcissist.

The goal of spending your life in opposition to Original Sin™ is to save your own soul, and you will be rewarded with life eternal in heaven.

The goal of opposing racism is to reduce the suffering of others, to fight against an unjust power structure, and to make a fairer and better world. You are a product of a white supremacist society and you can't escape that. But you can help build a society that *isn't* white supremacist. We have to deal with the reality that racism exists and is so pervasive it colors everyone's experience. But it has not always existed and it need not exist forever. Eradicating it is a generational project, but it can be done.

This is only comparable to Original Sin™ if you think about no one but yourself. If your only thought re: doing the right thing is how it will affect *you*. The moment you look beyond your boring-ass self, you notice, oh, hey, one of these is about getting into heaven and one is about materially helping other people.

Sorry there's no framing where fighting racism both in yourself and others brings you salvation. You're going to have to do it just because it's the right thing to do.
