    do some things different! demystify the unknown. build your tolerance for flux. you can start small: listen to music outside your comfort zone, look at confrontational art. maybe work your way up to taking on something you're not good at for a hobby, doing something you're actively scared of. the brain releases dopamine when it experiences novelty; a little dopamine feels good, a lot feels like a fucking panic attack. make more things familiar, and the strange will release a little less dopamine, get you in the sweet spot where, even if it's UNCOMFORTABLE, it's not SCARY. you'll be less biased against change, more open to doing something other than what you're already doing.

    I think the prevalence of open worlds, games-as-service models, and narrative DLCs means we are less reliant than ever on endings. they're still pretty powerful, but games like Skyrim and Minecraft and Stardew Valley and Destiny and Fortnite and Breath of the Wild are all things with ostensible "win states" but people keep playing long after that state is achieved or ignore that state for months or even years at a time. and that's not even getting into roguelikes and deck builders with their infinite content!

    maybe we're using different definitions of "end of Western democracy," but since Biden took office we've lost Roe v. Wade, SCOTUS declared the President can commit crimes with impunity, and we're funding a genocide. you can (shakily) argue 2 of those aren't Biden's doing, but electing him didn't stop them, so why would reelecting him stop more democratic erosion?

    so, yeah: Biden will fuck it up slower but no one in this campaign is gonna save Western democracy. no one is even trying.

    well, there are people who wanted the presidency he promised, and people who wanted the presidency he's given us (which are, it should be said, pretty different), but not enough to win the primary much less the election. he won because, regardless of platform, a lot of people thought he was our best chance at beating Trump.

    the fact that he won is, for some folks, evidence this was correct. others will argue that Trump was so despised that ANYONE could have beaten him, and it would've been a great time to take a big swing rather than play safe. but most liberals thought it vital to play safe.

    the annoying thing about voting is, if Biden convinces a lot of people he's the safe bet, then he IS the safe bet. he becomes the only one who can win because people vote as though it's true. we don't get to see the alternate timeline where Sanders or Warren or Harris or O'Rourke ran, so we'll never know if Biden was right or not.

    but it's worth remembering that he won without being particularly inspiring or even liked.
