Why do you think these movies have aged badly? (Besides the fact that not a lot of them were that good to begin with)

in response to Feeling like going back to rom-coms to temporarily escape from this hellish experience that we call "life" Are there any that you're a fan of?

    Ian replied:

mainstream comedy already ages poorly as it relies a lot on whatever they think a general public will enjoy, but throw in that rom-coms are often explicitly *about* the normative gender politics of the day, and... yeah

Would you consider yourself to be a reformist or revolutionary socialist?

    Ian replied:

Well, I'm gonna restate that I am an anticapitalist and a leftist but haven't declared an -ism because I haven't done the research I think is necessary to know what we should replace capitalism with.

But, re: reform vs. revolution, I am a short-term reformist with the long-term goal of revolution. I think reform is necessary as harm reduction, to help us survive under capitalism, keep our allies alive, and put us in the best position for real change. But I do not believe capitalism can be reformed into something ethical, and being even *tolerable* is only ever a passing condition. Capitalism is fundamentally unsustainable and needs to be ended or it will collapse and bring us all down with it.

But I also don't know what form revolution should take.

    Ian replied:

honestly, I can't think of any genre that ages worse? looking at lists of "best rom-coms" and they're either movies I dislike or movies I really enjoyed at a time and now go "eeeeeeesh."

When Harry Met Sally is still mostly solid, though there's the whole debate over whether it's really a rom-com since men like it and don't want to admit they like a chick flick.

Do you agree with (I think it was) Stephen King who said that horror is a fundamentally conservative genre, in that you fear what will change the status quo, be it your nice suburban life, or your body being whole and not chopped up?

in response to What themes do you want to see in horror more

    Ian replied:

I dunno, I'd have to read the quote in context to be sure, but in the past few years, with Assassination Nation, Get Out, and Ready or Not, we've seen horror tropes used to align audiences with trans girls, Black men, and working class women and against cops, the wealthy, pretty much all of society. So it feels like "I don't want to get chopped up" is a really excellent way to get audiences to identify with people who are outside the status quo.

Do you think it is worth it to try to come up with alternatives to ACAB, defund the police, and abolish the police that more clearly communicate what we mean by those statements?

in response to How come leftist slogans (defund the police, ACAB, trans women are women, black lives matter, abolish ICE) always seem to require non-trivial explanations not only to make people understand what they really mean, but even that they are not silly or even nasty, especially when contrasted with how dead simple and effective the liberal/conservative responses like "all lives matter" or "sex is real" are work superficially; It's just so frustrating because going against what comes easiest to most people seems like an unwinnable proposition

    Ian replied:

I literally just said this will happen no matter how we phrase our argument. No matter how much they say otherwise, the opposition hates the thing we're suggesting, not the words we use to suggest it, and stumping for the status quo will always be easier and simpler than advocating change.

The best defense is to encourage people to think critically and complexly about the issues, because then conservative arguments stop working on them.

What do you think the alternative to 'cancelling' is? Like a way to hold people accountable within our movement that doesn't end up death threats and harassment.

    Ian replied:

The main issue I see with cancelling is it's conflated "holding people in power accountable" with "keeping our communities safe."

Cancelling Kevin Spacey wasn't primarily about "protecting our community." Kevin Spacey did not pose a threat to most of the people involved in cancelling him. Part of the reason to cancel is to deal with people so famous or powerful that they are functionally immune to community policing; you can't just disassociate with or shun him, he's untouchable. He interacts with all of us through media unless you stop the media from getting made.

Whereas, within a "community" in the traditional sense, cancelling often just means not letting that person interact with the group anymore, because they pose a threat or have caused an irreconcilable conflict with a community member. This can go a few ways; I know of communities where, the moment says "this person is an abuser," the whole community immediately disavows them, and then, sometimes, over the years they notice, "wait... we've cancelled a lot of people and it's always the same person who accuses them, are we sure THEY'RE not the abuser?" But I've also been in communities where people are very, very slow to cancel, because each person is deeply stitched into the community and removing them is going to be complex and painful and everyone's afraid of cancelling if there are still other avenues to try. Sometimes this is founded and the conflict can be resolved, and sometimes it means a toxic person stays way too long, and it's hard to tell which is which. And, either way, you rarely try to get that person fired from their job or cancel everyone who even speaks to them.

But the logic of cancelling internet personalities keeps flipping back and forth. Like... JK Rowling is (semi-)cancelled not because she assaulted or abused anyone, but because she's spreading TERF rhetoric. In most communities, that would be grounds for a conversation, maybe an ultimatum if it persists, which cancelling as a last resort. We're not in a position to do that with Rowling, and, because her audience is so huge, her words have a lot more impact than just some random member of your local Gay-Straight Alliance. So she's held to a stricter standard.

But when cancelling an internet personality? People use the "this person is a threat and must be removed for our safety" of a serial abuser, but with the "we must remove their base of power" strategies of a problematic celebrity. They don't get the private call-in convo of a normal community, but they aren't protected by fame. It's the worst of both worlds: they're treated with the scorched earth tactics of someone untouchable but they are very much touchable, and I feel it's, in part, because the parasocial nature of the internet means minor celebrities *feel* like community members, and so their transgressions feel like personal betrayals, but amplified by the fact that it's affecting thousands instead of dozens.

    Canon + capitalism = complicated.

I didn't have twitter at the time of the contrapoints buck angel controversy so i was wondering what your thoughts on it were, considering your research into hate mobs?

    Ian replied:

What I found is that, given it was a conflict between a trans woman and a portion of the nonbinary community where people were, right or wrong, feeling genuine pain, there was really no way I, as a cis person, could weigh in constructively. Any time I would try to talk angry people down, it just came off as a cis person who doesn't understand why XYZ person is a problem - even in cases where I did - or as a cis person policing how trans people are allowed to behave. The trans community does not owe me the benefit of the doubt, and, without it, I couldn't find a way to talk on the subject that didn't just make things worse. Believe me, I tried to find it.

But did not and will not cancel Natalie Wynn, and find her to be very obviously *not* a transmedicalist.

It's just so frustrating because going against what comes easiest to most people seems like an unwinnable proposition

    Ian replied:

Well, the short answer is because "all lives matter" and "sex is real" are designed to keep things as they are where "Black lives matter" and "trans women are women" are asking for change, and people don't need the status quo explained to them.

BUT ALSO it's because people willfully misconstrue them?! Like, the phrase "Black lives matter" should be the most goddamn uncontroversial statement in the English language. The *only* reason it sounds divisive is *because* of the response "all lives matter." No one was confused by what BLM stood for until ALM came along.

Make no mistake, phrases like "all lives matter" and "sex is real" and "it's okay to be white" exist to create controversy out of uncontroversial statements. There *is no progressive statement* that they can't do this with. No matter how seemingly inoffensive, there is no slogan that advocates for change that can't be countered with an even more seemingly-inoffensive slogan that advocates for things staying as they are.

Because, it turns out, what is or isn't "offensive" or "complicated" has more to do with what it demands of the listener than its actual morality.

in response to Genuine question: What exactly is wrong with Rowling's tweet? Is there some transphobic dogwhistle there?

    Ian replied:

    - saying "sex is real" includes the unspoken argument that trans people say it's not
    - saying womanness is dependent on sex being "real" includes the unspoken argument that cisnormative definitions of sex are the only way sex can be "real," that anything else is a universe without gender
    - saying that, without "real" sex, you are erasing the experience of women includes the unspoken argument that treating trans people as valid invalidates cis experiece and even implies it erases misogyny

all of this is obvious to me, though I get that it's deliberately phrases so as to be unobvious to many. but it's harmful in the way that all lives matter is harmful, despite seeming innocuous without context.

    Ian replied:

I don't know. The people making demands aren't calling for that, but I suppose if someone used this opportunity to make private police but spin the PR as though it were community-run law enforcement, other cities might try the same. I feel like worrying about it requires making a lot of assumptions, though, and I don't have enough information to make me think those assumptions are valid. Hey Ian, any book recommendations on wealth inequality? I went through your research masterpost and didn't find anything specifically about that topic.

    Ian replied:

Less about wealth inequality but more about poverty generally, I can recommend A Framework for Understanding Poverty by Ruby K. Payne and Unequal Childhoods by Annette Lareau. Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich is a little more pop science-y (and kinda liberal) but still has a lot of good observations. Orwell's Down & Out in Paris and London is also an excellent resource on poverty, though it has little to do with the modern economy.

Griftopia by Matt Taibbi was a pretty good explainer on the subprime mortgage scam, but Taibbi has turned out to be a scumbag so I feel very conflicted about recommending him.

A lot of my research into how the rich get richer in the modern day has been piecemeal, not a lot of specific books I can point do. Honestly, the most useful research I did was, several years ago, just setting aside an afternoon to research Reaganomics. That was just a cluster of articles online, but getting my head around that was probably the most important piece of the puzzle.

    Good book about police abolition.

in response to Do you think policing is so fundamentally broken that the only meaningful fix would be to defund/abolish it outright? If so, what alternative method of law enforcement would be ideal? I am, unfortunately, a liberal, so I struggle to imagine what a future society without at least an institution comparable to the police would even look like.

    Ian replied:

I haven't done a lot of research on police/prison abolition. But there's a lot of different ideas on how we could replace both institutions. Similarly to "what would the world look like without capitalism," there are a lot of forms it could take. Let's free our imaginations a bit and stop assuming there's only one thing that works and humanity already found it.

I'm from the UK so most of my exposure to the protests has been through social media. What do you think is the current public feeling about them in America? Has there been any shift in perceptions of the police?

    Ian replied:

the thing about the modern media is it is legitimately impossible to tell what the current feeling is. mainstream media has its narrative which is almost entirely focused on "looting," social media is tailored to a person's own politics and social circles. not that there ever was an objective source providing accurate temperature checks, and even those making an effort were probably pretty biased, but there at least WAS AN EFFORT, and I feel we've gotten even further from it in my lifetime. it's startling the degree to which we are aware that all information has been tailored or spun before we get it, that there is literally no way to know what most of the country is feeling right now.

for the purposes of that story, yes. the whole point of it being John Malkovich was that it was someone intriguing that we didn't know very much about. make it the most famous man on Earth and it's a completely different premise.

How's the situation in Massachusetts? Any protests and/or curfews?

    Ian replied:

There was a somewhat dubious protest yesterday that claimed it was supported by the NAACP and the Mass chapter of BLM but wasn't, but near as we can tell it was just run by some over-eager college students and went off peaceably. So far as I know, no curfews, no police escalation, no teargas or rubber bullets.

    Ian replied:

It's one of those "plausible but we have to be alert for disinformation" kinda things. Keep your ears open for evidence that this is a spook story meant to delegitimize the uprisers.

Also I've heard everything from "white Alt-Righters" to "white cops in plain clothes" so let's not leap to blaming the anarchists just yet.

I dont understand why you defend looting and random destruction. I'm fine with violent protest against the police and destruction of police property. But random looting is just bad. And don't try to compare this to the Boston tea party, the revolutionaries were dumping tea from the east India company an agent of the British empire. Just answer why you think looting is OK no random unrelated observations just tell me why?

    Ian replied:

I don't "defend" looting, I just understand it. The Hampton Institute summed it up well: "You can't commodify every single aspect of living and then not understand looting as a legitimate form of protest. Looting is the ultimate strike against a system that deems mass-produced objects to be far more precious than life itself. It is humanity demanding to be recognized."

I'm mostly curious about what the left response is to it, or just why it's not a sound idea, because to me like a lot of right wing libert stuff it's like the premise seems to be in broad agreement but the proposed solution is in itself dumb. But maybe it's actually OK somehow?

in response to I hear "taxation is theft" from nerdos, what's the deal there?

    Ian replied:

see, there's where you're wrong. libertarians actually see the world very, very different from the Left, and you can't really argue with them about taxation without first getting to the root differences in your philosophies. if you don't have the time and energy for that, you might wanna just let the argument slide.

in response to What's your take on people insisting "All Lives Matter" in the current George Floyd & looting situation? Not so much about being explicitly ignorant of the plight of the black community, but there are people who are thinking of other Muslim, Asian counterparts who are also just as ostracized in the past and present.. would you accept one's take that All Lives Do Matter Alongside Black Lives, hence All Lives Matter?

    Ian replied:

Black people are responding to the murder of Black people. Have you ever once seen a Black person try to end a conversation about the treatment of Muslims after 9/11 by yelling "Black Lives Matter"? They are in no way negating the efforts of other marginalized people and you'll note BLM activists tend to speak out more for other marginalized groups than the white folks saying "All Lives Matter."

What do you think of the phrase "no bad tactics, only bad targets"? I've been hearing it in certain Leftie spaces lately.

I actually agree, but I feel like the people invoking the phrase are usually justifying the use of tactics in situations where they're aren't justified. Like, just because the rule is true doesn't mean you're following it.
