  6. I respect your opinion but still think that certain crimes that are heinous (like mass-murder and serial killing, rape and torture) and proven without a doubt should have the death penalty. For example ted bundy escaped and murdered 3 people while in prison perhaps they could have killed him faster. Pedro Lopez is another example he murdered 110 young girls was put in prison then released and now roams free. He almost certainly has murdered more since then, he should have been executed.

  7. Having watched (and fully appreciated) Bringing Back What’s Stolen, what are the merits of telling the stories of common women tropes in subversive ways? Is there good justification for writing women in the ways men expect to see women in male-dominated genres, so long as it doesn’t fall prey to the (often sexist) playouts of those common tropes?

    I ask because I’m writing a woman spaceship Captain (for a thing) and her main trait and flaw is her infallible drive and ambition—traits usually written masculine, or seen as faults in women. And I’m curious if there’s a way to use the trope of a woman written (a little bit) like a man without falling into the pitfalls of writing a woman like a man, that or finding a way to do it subversively enough to make the story still worth telling.

    I'm not a writing coach, but I would say to think about the driven, ambitious women you've known and try to be true to them. Maybe ask them about their experience, whether they've been seen as masculine, and how they feel about it, and how they see themselves. The best defense against writing a trope is to write a believable human being.

  9. Why is it that alot of reactionaries are Sci-fi fans? For Sci-Fi to be good you have to imagine the human race or any fictional race that doesn't have the current technological restraints AND the Social Norms the work was made.

    I've talked at length about how fandoms radicalize. If there's a large white male population in a community, Nazis are gonna target it, and never underestimate how thoroughly white guys can miss the point of the media they love.

  10. I recently read a study that suggested that racist resentment only changes across generations because each generation is more diverse; that, if you control for whites, racism remains the same. The data is the data, so I can't argue with that, but this is a hard pill to swallow because even though millenials and gen z can obviously be virulently racist (chan culture, alt right, &c.), most normies I know find racism deeply repulsive, at least outwardly. It also implies any gains made through education are pointless, because white people will just stay racist no matter what, which is really bleak. What do you think about this? I don't know if you've seen that study, but are what people just always gonna be racist, and if so, what to do about that? (Sorry for the long question)

    OK, let's talk about the First Amendment for a second. Freedom of Speech does not claim that all speech is valuable, nor that some speech isn't actively harmful. The point of the First Amendment is that it is incredibly dangerous for the government to decide which speech is and isn't valuable. That is a power you should expect governments to misuse.

    And, if you believe the powerful can't be trusted with the right to censor, you can follow that they *definitely* shouldn't be trusted with the right to murder their own citizens.

    It's not a question of whether people "deserve" to live or not, it's a question of whether *anyone* can be trusted to make that judgment. Any system that determines the right to live can be expected to either be corrupted or to simply fail from time to time. What is an acceptable margin of error when putting people to death? 5%? It's never going to be 0%, so we're asking how many innocents and political prisoners - how many Peltiers and Abu-Jamals - should be put on death row on the way to killing McVeighs and Tarrants?

    And what does putting people to death accomplish? You can say it's about wasting resources, but that's not why people advocate for the death penalty. It's because bad people getting killed feels like justice to them. It doesn't save that much money, it doesn't work as a deterrent, people just think it'll make them feel better. And, frankly, I haven't seen much evidence that it does. It offends our sensibilities to think someone could kill our loved ones and then be kept alive on the taxpayer's dollar, but killing them doesn't bring our loved ones back. It's not some shortcut through the grieving process. The world is cruel and capricious and putting some asshole who's already in jail where they can't hurt anyone to death isn't going to rebalance the scales.

    I'm also one of these people who thinks our legal system should be focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment, and that the ideology that says some things make you an unperson no longer deserving of life is exactly the one that people use to justify murdering your loved ones in the first place, and maybe we shouldn't be spreading the belief that, for the right reasons, murder is justified, because why the hell *wouldn't* people take it into their own hands then?

    So maybe I'm the wrong person to ask.

    Both, maybe more the second thing than the first, but, honestly? I just don't see how predictions are valuable. If I make a prediction and it turns out I'm right, bully for me. But I'd rather we keep in mind that things happen when we make them happen and the future isn't written. Whether or not Joe Biden wins the primaries has a lot to do with what we do between now and then.

    Men who don't fit traditional notions of masculinity are marginalized, but not oppressed. No one is trying to take their rights away, they aren't murdered at significantly higher rates, they aren't barred from holding office, you can't legally discriminate against them in the workplace. That's what we mean when we talk about oppression.

    They are socially stigmatized, and often suffer because of it, and acknowledging that this is not a systemic oppression doesn't erase that it's a real problem, that their pain is legitimate, or that toxic masculinity hurts them even as it also hurts women.

    But stigma != oppression.

    I don't know how to answer that. I state multiple times in multiple videos that these processes are not consciously-designed but arrived at through trial-and-error, often by acting on reflex. These tactics evolve the way species do: whatever works spreads; whatever doesn't gets out-competed by something that does. The speed of the internet means you can get a robust set of strategies very quickly.

    Some of the people involved probably know what they're doing, but that doesn't mean they designed it, it doesn't mean they control it, and understanding it is not a prerequisite to being part of it.

    Absolutely not. Trust is very important for making connections with people. But you're not trying to "make a connection" with a politician and any sense that you have done so is a parasocial relationship. Anyone can let you down; that is a leap of faith you take with your interpersonal relationships. But voting is not forming an interpersonal relationship. Don't trust people whom you don't actually know and whose job incentivizes them to exploit your trust.

    Monogamy is perfectly fine.

    Compulsory monogamy is, yeah, kind of inherently oppressive.

    Some may argue that, as long as compulsory monogamy is the norm, all monogamy is oppressive. Sorta like the radfems who say that, as long as patriarchy exists, all heterosexual sex is rape. And I can see the point they're making, but I don't think those framings are compelling or useful.

    Or maybe the folks you're talking to are just annoying polyams who want everyone open so they can hook up with whomever. Those folks can get hecked.
