    Can you have a piece of media deliver a message that stirs strong emotions in you (similar to affective override), but leaves you thinking critically and rationally of that message and able to make a logically coherent argument for or against it?     No, I don't think they are. Strong emotions and rational thinking are two different things, and while one CAN override the other, it's not a fact that it MUST. I mean, PSA's are a decent example of pieces of media that try to appeal to both your mind AND your emotions, and there's a degree of manipulation there, but it's rarely as extreme as a propaganda film that desperately wants you to shut your mind off completely.

  7. Hi, so, I checked out your reading list and I picked up Elizabeth Sandifer's "Neoreaction: A Basilisk". It was a great read but I'm still kind of confused about what she was going for when she talked about hauntology vs. the alien; it was during a section where she broke down why Nick Land was a bad philosopher. What did you make of it? What was the overall message you took away after reading it?

    I read that a while ago and can't directly conjure up how the analogy worked. Also El is coming from a philosophy background and I can't say I didn't get lost in the weeds a few times during the main essay. I could reread it for a refresher, but it's like 130 pages long, so... I think we're both SOL right now.

    So... OK. Here's where we get into the squishiness in defining "propaganda."

    To paraphrase Dan Olson's (excellent) video on Triumph of the Will, the dictionary definition will say propaganda is any goal-driven ideological messaging, and, as such, signs saying "pick up after your dog" are technically propaganda. So, by this definition, yeah, PSAs are propaganda, but I think this definition is too broad to be useful for our purposes.

    I tend to focus on the things we usually *mean* when we say "propaganda," the archetype of which would be something like Soviet posters, US military newsreels, or Triumph of the Will itself. Jason Stanley's book How Propaganda Works focuses on works like these and discusses the emotional mechanisms they use to manipulate viewers.

    For him, the defining feature of what we usually think of when we refer to propaganda is what he calls "affective override," a term I used in my White Fascism video. Affective override is when a piece of media pings your emotions in such a way that you feel bonded to the institution behind the media but aren't able to think critically about the message. The Germans invoking fear of the Jewish Scourge and/or evoking national pride for the German Soldier were major tactics.

    Through this lens, propaganda is *always* emotional manipulation, even when it tells you the truth.

    I prefer Stanley's definition, because defining "propaganda" so broadly that Triumph of the Will and my own work technically fall under the umbrella seems counterproductive. If everything with a message is propaganda, then we don't have a term for the emotional manipulation Stanley discusses so exhaustively, and, since that term neatly overlaps with the things we most commonly think of when we hear "propaganda," I think that's the definition I'd rather go with.

    So that's how I would define the difference between a nonfictional PSA and propaganda: one is trying (usually) to persuade with rational argument, and one is trying to affect the emotions in such a way that rational argument becomes impossible.

    High turnout tends to go badly for Republicans, yeah. But I think it's too early to make useful predictions. The Dems don't even have a candidate yet.

    Oi, that is a question, isn't it? Like, my reflex is to say, if a shitload of evidence is going to come out against Trump and Republican Senators are still going to keep him in office, I want them to admit it on camera. Trump's base hearing the Senate flatly admit that the President is above the law is going to make them fucking SWELL with authoritarian pride.

    So I dunno what's right. We've been through the looking glass for three years now and I have no idea what works anymore.

    I mean... I don't think single-issue voters really exist, you know? I think most people who *claim* to be single-issue voters are really giving themselves an excuse not to think about politics. People who say "I won't vote for anyone who supports abortion" is trying to say "just because I vote Republican doesn't mean I'm OK with letting undocumented children die in cages and handing Supreme Court seats to rapists," but, like... it does. They *are* OK with those things, they just want their single issue to exculpate them. Odds are, if the Democrats reversed their position on abortion rights, they'd still vote Republican, because they're OK with all the other stuff and just didn't want to admit it.

    Thankfully, our staunchest climate activists are also pushing for excellent social and economic policies, so if that's what someone wants to pretend is their single issue, they're at least voting for good things on the side.

    I'm not sure what my stance is anymore. For a while I was a softer version of exactly what you describe: if you're in a position to deradicalize someone, sure, it's worth doing, but it should be opt-in and not our larger strategy. There are tons of people already on our side who are having their voices and rights stripped away, and I would rather we focus on empowering them than fighting over the souls of some angry white boys.

    And, while that's still true, studying the recruitment process made it quite clear that there's a population of people falling down the Far Right rabbit hole because the Right is courting them and the Left is not. We've largely written them off. And, given that so many of the concerns the Right taps into would actually be better addressed by progressive leftism, I'm starting to think that some more concentrated intervention would be good. If for no other reason than because everyone we divert from the Alt-Right pipeline is one less person we have to fight.

    I just worry that the moment you give it any attention people are going to fixate on it, you know? Society reflexively cares more about angry white boys than disenfranchised POC, and it's hard to imagine any meaningful deradicalization policy not stealing energy away from all the other work, because white liberals care too much about rescuing the world's Gabes. But if we could manage to say "we will devote 8% of our energy to deradicalization and not a fraction more" I think it would be worthwhile.

    This is my point about specificity: these are all things that *can* be seen with mental illness, but also in neurotypical people. Delirium can be the result of mental illness, or a concussion, or a psychoactive drug. Wacky can mean intentional, playful silliness. You can have delusions with a strong fever. None of them are synonyms for "crazy." The point is, describing the actual *thing that is happening*, rather than a shorthand that just means "mentally ill," means describing traits that can occur for any number of reasons, mental illness being only one, and therefore not making statements about a person's cognitive capacity but rather the traits they are exhibiting.

    she was very obviously talking about the people who popped up for 10 minutes on the stream to say "trans rights ok" in DK's voice, not Harry himself. and she's not even insulting them, just saying that what they're doing, however meaningful the gesture, is just a gesture, and is not, in and of itself, activism.

  65. My exposure to far-right ideas for many years was on the basis on- and i'm being vague on purpose here- a popular website that had a lot of commenters of lot of different political backgrounds. Over time i found that i was spending a lot of time responding to and countering the public display of far-right ideas, and I only stopped at the point where i realized that going there had become, a bit like your video suggests, a place where i want to relax, but i can only get more angry, digital self harm, and that it was coarsening my beliefs without really moving my beliefs left or right.     It's kind of hard to weight the ethics of time travel since we don't really know how time travel would work. If you change something in the past, do you change your future, or create a different timeline? The ethics are very different.

    Given the (somewhat squidgy) rules of BttF, I think dismantling the time machine is probably the right course, though it dodges the question of "what happens the next time someone invents this technology?"

  69. I've noticed you have (or present) a really healthy relationship with your work, you're able to be genuinely proud of what you've done. Was this an attitude that came naturally or did you have to develop it over time?

    I blame art school. You get warned in orientation that you're going to get some harsh crits that make you cry, especially early on, and you develop a pretty healthy relationship to criticism. You also learn how to be a healthy critic of other people's work, how to discern which flaws actually weaken the material and which ones are mostly trivial. I got a lot of practice negotiating with my internal critic, and learning to look at my own work with the generosity I owed other students. It's a weird mix of both having thick skin but also staying really emotionally open.

    So I can see flaws in my work, but I also know which flaws are dealbreakers and which ones aren't. I notice flaws in other people's work as well, but, when I see what they're trying to communicate and feel it's by and large getting across, I know those flaws aren't important. And I work on my videos until I feel that core experience is getting across, and I know then that any further work is just polish. And maybe I polish more than is strictly necessary, but I don't obsess over it.

    And, I mean, I make the videos I want to see, so I'm pretty excited once they exist. :)

  75. How about the "authoritarian family, church and education" institutions? Institutions that literally suppress the natural sexuality of the person growing up? Most of us born in the 80s and 90s playing video games really ran away with most abusive parents.

    in response to i dunno there's something eternally entertaining about people who use "x is a result of sexual repression" as a form of structural critique

    in that case the sexual repression is a symptom of a larger abusive pattern that can make one more susceptible to fascist recruitment
