I see. When discussing these issues, I tend to use different phrases (“patriarchy” to “strict gender roles” and “toxic masculinity” to “bully mentality”) because I worry these phrases can invoke a stop-thinking-and-start-shouting defense mechanism in some men. Did you ever have that reaction when you were young?
-
Anonymous commented:
Do you consider concepts like “patriarchy”, “toxic masculinity” or “privilege” to be “mainstream”, aka “understood by most people”? I feel like a lot of The DiscourseTM is still stuck around these (to me easy to understand) concepts that Idk if it’s largely beause of right-wingers astroturfing or if people are just that ignorant

How come you never played Halo before?
The first one was also playable in Mac too
But I do get it if you're not interested. Though it's sci-fi, it's very pro-military and it fetish military hardware (especially the alien side called the Covenant) which makes Michael Bay look like a saint in comparison
Also, Halo 1 has really good plot twists in the end (which ends up being derivative as the series progressed)

So I noticed that the show tunes at the beginning of the videos fit thematically with what the videos are about (someone's got to be oppressed was my fav btw) but I couldn't make out what the song before "Card Says Moops" was saying. What were the lyrics?

This is a bit more complex than that - Mao for example is well known and to some extent respected on the left for his theoretical work even though he was very authoritarian.
The main problem seems to be that revolutions are either taken over by authoritarians or destroyed from the outside by the imperialist core.
Do you think there is a way to do a radicaly left policy anywhere in the world and not be assassinated/imprisoned with the help of the US other than protecting yourself with authoritarian policies ? How ?

Would you be willing to do more videos on individual adventure games? The genre doesn't get enough love online. And the only long-form videos I know of are just Speed-runners showing how to finish a P&C as fast as possible without giving any thought or critique on the actual quality of the game.
I know this isn't really your genre, but outside of Errant Signal, and his stuff isn't really in the Long dive into the game itself that I'm looking for. He more covers the meta-narrative of the game's themes and its development

Hi! I love your series. I didn't know you had one of these.
I have passed your video on to a few friends, and although they love the variety which focuses on non-online discourse (You Go High, We Go Low; Death of a Euphemism), they don't seem to enjoy the online-discourse focused ones. That is, ones featuring discussions of Anita Sarkeesian (who, although attained some internet fame, is almost totally non-existent in the eye of people who are just, like, thinking about Brexit).
Two questions:
1. Do you have any plans to tackle Brexit as a topic? Or are you just not familiar enough with the UK political landscape? Many of your videos feel very pointed at the US — and the UK has its own set of institutional, systemic issues.
2. Do your videos, on your end, perform better when they stray from online discourse into mainstream-salient content? i.e. parsable by the average person who just does not know what a troll is

I'm asking sincerely here. You mention in one of your videos "if you want to fight fascist, move left" but you have said that a lot of workers or revolutionary parties go into power and then suddenly get coopted by authoritarians.
Isn't this a contradiction? If we're moving Left and thus moving more and more into a violent revolution and suddenly authoritarians are in power this feels like a contradiction. Political cadres, Vanguardism, Social Responsibility Tests, Exporting the Revolution. These are Leftist policies through and through are they not?

I'm a different person than the one who asked this question, but it seems like a "fake it 'til you make it" approach might work here. If you believe strongly enough in the kind of world you want to create, that belief can give you the energy you need to create that world.

There's different ethnicities within white people. White Spaniards are a specific ethnicity like Anglo-Saxons aren't Slavic people.
-
Anonymous commented:
To be honest, now I am totally confused. Why it's racist malarkey to say certain ethnicities are white/black/asian? How then you would say person is white/black/asian? Simply by their looks?
For example, how would you answer my question if I have asked are Russian people white? Well, I think you would say the same, "white russian are white", even though Russian people as ethnic group and Russian people as citizenship goes are two different things. Nobody would argue that Buryats are white, but they don't belong to Russian ethnic group, they are different ethnic group called Buryats and they are asian, even though they are Russian.
Why it's racist then to say spaniards are white?
Also, before you say, there are few Russians who are black and/or muslim, it doesn't make Russians as ethnicity any less white.

In "The Card Says Moops" you said that 'Englebert will sometimes make a Charlamagne argument and vice versa... and the left does the same thing but that's a false equivalence'.
My question is, what're some examples of the left engaging in "The Card Says Moops" rhetoric, and why is that a false equivalence? (love your channel btw, huge fan)

Have you played The Fall? I got hooked on the premise and its downloading as I type. ("Do the Bidding of An Evil AI" Portal-a-like to do with applying an essentially violent skillset to mundane puzzle solving tasks. The player is a femme coded exosuit trying to get medical help for their pilot.)
It's apparently very well regarded so I thought you'd have good odds of having tried it. And I value your opinion so I thought you'd have good odds of having something interesting to say if you had.
-
Anonymous commented:
You are being willfully obtuse here. Spaniards is ethnicity. I didn't ask about Spanish people. Of course there Spanish people who are black, just like there are Scottish people who are black, but that doesn't mean that Scottish people as ethnic group aren't white. Spaniards is not the same as Spanish people. So, back to my original question, are spaniards considered white?

Good question! I actually haven't read the other stuff you have, so it's hard for me to say.
What I took away from it was an understanding of fascism less as a specific political beliefs but more as a narrative of unjust loss of power and a fated return, much like the palingenetic ultranationalism point. Paxton also talks at length, however, about the political circumstances that tend to birth fascism, such as an ineffectual left and discontent with the mainstream right. That's not something I've seen mentioned in your Alt-Right Playbook work so far, so it might be a useful read for that perspective?
-
Anonymous commented:
I was looking over your reading list (which is a fantastic resource; thanks so much), and I noticed you didn't have The Anatomy of Fascism by Robert Paxton on there. I'd like to suggest it! I read it during the '16 election and found it really useful at outlining a theory of fascism and how it develops.
Have you read it?

I picked up a neat little tidbit of information from a video.
Apparently youtube promotes monetized content more than it promotes unmonetized content.
Is this as true as it is for content that was never monetized as it is for content that was once monetized but was later deemed ineligible?

i think the left and right tend to have different applications of an 'echo chamber'? like, im a gay trans man and what some (mostly the right, it seems) would call an 'echo chamber' for me is just being around people affirming that i exist and deserve human rights. it seems like both the left and right have the general 'thoughts without dissent or diversity' definition of an echo chamber, but how that's applied is different?

Is echo chambers on the left something we should be concerned about online? In a way I feel that even if your'e only listening to Liberal and radical-lefty sources your in a very different situation intellectually than a person that listens to "both" alt-right and conservative sources.

Still trying to piece together why GoT went the way it did.
