    It really is hard to tell, isn't it? I have no idea how well the average person on the street understands toxic masculinity, or if they're even familiar with the term. All I know is, whatever The Discourse looks like is probably not wholly representative, but I don't know by how much.

    I found Get Out both more moment-to-moment enjoyable and also more coherent. Us is about a lot of stuff, and some of the stuff it's about seems - to me - in conflict with the other stuff it's about, and, as much as people argue from the assumption that this confusion is intentional, I'm not wholly convinced. The idea that Peele had a lot of ideas and a lot of ambition and didn't entire bring them together this time still strikes me as plausible.

    It's Oom-Pah-Pah from Oliver! The line is:

    "Whether it's hidden or whether it shows,
    It's the same oom-pah-pah."

    I meant it to resonate with the closing Vonnegut quote, "We are what we pretend to be." Whether a person is open about their bigotry, hiding it from you, or hiding it from themselves, it's all still bigotry. How much irony is involved really doesn't matter that much. It's the same oom-pah-pah.

    They don't really have much to do with each other. Media Studies is an academic field focused on analyzing mass communication, like TV and the internet. As far as I know, MassArt is the only school that has an Interrelated Media degree, and it's a Fine Arts program, as in you make and present art for credit. What makes the Studio for Interrelated Media different from the other departments is it's an interdisciplinary major - you can produce art in ANY medium, and it will get critiqued by people who specialize in a dozen or so disciplines. You also learn a lot about production: students are in charge of presenting each other's work, so if, on a given day, there are two videos, one performance, one installation, and one piece of wall art, the producers have to arrange the space and tech to accommodate it all. A lot of folks from the Studio for Interrelated Media go on to work crew for live theatre or music venues.

    That question is the biggest reason I hesitate when people call for socialist revolution. I don't know what differentiates the revolutions that get coopted by authoritarians from the ones that don't.

    I pretty much only make a video if I feel I have something I want to say, so I can't really commit to talking more or less about adventure games. I'll talk about a individual adventure game if I play one that makes me wanna talk about it. But I think odds are pretty good that I'll do that from time to time, since it is my favorite genre and, like you, I feel there isn't enough critical analysis of them.

  16. Hi! I love your series. I didn't know you had one of these.

    I have passed your video on to a few friends, and although they love the variety which focuses on non-online discourse (You Go High, We Go Low; Death of a Euphemism), they don't seem to enjoy the online-discourse focused ones. That is, ones featuring discussions of Anita Sarkeesian (who, although attained some internet fame, is almost totally non-existent in the eye of people who are just, like, thinking about Brexit).

    Two questions:

    1. Do you have any plans to tackle Brexit as a topic? Or are you just not familiar enough with the UK political landscape? Many of your videos feel very pointed at the US — and the UK has its own set of institutional, systemic issues.

    2. Do your videos, on your end, perform better when they stray from online discourse into mainstream-salient content? i.e. parsable by the average person who just does not know what a troll is

    1. No plans to talk about Brexit. Olly and Hbomb are already speaking on that with much more authority than I could.

    2. If you're not talking about online, you're not talking about modern fascism.

    The next ARP is going to get more explicit about this, but the Nazis went digital around 2013 and the Left *has not caught up*. Online is where they organize, where they radicalize, where they host disinformation, and where they recruit. There are a lot of ways that this shift has changed white nationalism, from the ways it's expanded their influence to the ways its cost them control over their followers, but there isn't a comprehensive means of addressing online fascism the way there has been for addressing in-the-streets fascism. The series is called The Alt-Right Playbook, so, yeah, it's going to deal with the playbook the Alt-Right actually uses.

    Your friends who don't follow the online stuff? Getting their heads around it is the whole point.

    I haven't done a ton of research, but to the best of my understanding they were people who took advantage of a power vacuum after the revolution to seize power for themselves.

    No. Leftist revolution does not always result in authoritarian coopting.

    Number 35 is just as important number 100, but it's not as noticeable how.

    The premise of The Handmaid's Tale is New England becoming an independent religious theocracy that forces fertile women into service as child-bearers for men and ships them off to The Colonies to die of radiation poisoning if they don't conceive.

    One of the themes of the book is how life for women gets incrementally more restrictive in ways that are problematic but don't seem like imminent crises, but then, suddenly, in a matter of weeks women are disallowed from working, their bank accounts are frozen, and transit out of state is forbidden.

    So, while I don't know how bad things will get, the fact that they're getting bad faster and faster is distressing.

    Anyone who values winning an argument over being rhetorically consistent will fall into this. People on the Left are guilty of it, too. I've certainly had arguments in my younger days where I just kind of reached for any rhetoric that would tell me the other person was wrong, even if it wasn't consistent with what I'd said earlier. Any time a liberal makes an egalitarian argument like "corporations should pay their fair share" and, in the next breath, makes a hierarchical argument like "you should vote with your dollar," you're seeing a conflict of ideology.

    The reason it's a false equivalence is that the Right does this far more pervasively, far more blatantly, and far more destructively than the Left. The whole reason they say "the Left does it too" is to reframe the behavior as a binary - either your side does it, or not. They seek to ignore scale. Conservative ideology creates so much cognitive dissonance that the only defense is to insist "everybody does this, no one actually believes in anything, we all just say whatever we need to win." And it's not true.

    What I took away from it was an understanding of fascism less as a specific political beliefs but more as a narrative of unjust loss of power and a fated return, much like the palingenetic ultranationalism point. Paxton also talks at length, however, about the political circumstances that tend to birth fascism, such as an ineffectual left and discontent with the mainstream right. That's not something I've seen mentioned in your Alt-Right Playbook work so far, so it might be a useful read for that perspective?

    Hmm. Some of the stuff I've read has covered similar stuff, though this might go into better depth on it. I'm always torn about this, because people sometimes recommend me books that sounds better than the ones I've read on those topics, but I can't tell if they'll give me *new* information or just the same information *better explained*. I feel like I'm always under a mountain of research and I'm loathe to add more if I don't know how much new info it will add. Ugh!

    You should be concerned about echo chambers in any part of life, but let's talk about what the Left and the Right do and don't know about each other.

    The Right - especially the Very Online Right - spends a lot more time seeking direct, combative engagement with the Left, which they try to spin as stepping out of their echo chambers. Conversely, the Left spends a lot more time researching the subjects the Right is talking about and what the Right is saying about them. And a result of this (and several other factors) is that the Left generally understands what the Right is doing and saying where the Right has only a caricatured notion of what the Left cares about, but the Right can predict and account for the behaviors of the Left where the Left still vaguely assumes that healthy discourse will sort everything out.

    Or, in briefer language: the Right knows the Left's behavior, the Left know's the Right's rhetoric, and neither is really engaging with the other's ideology.

    I think "echo chamber" is a very misused term these days. Speaking from my own experience, there is a huge diversity of thought on the Left, and I am constantly having my beliefs challenged and enriched by other lefties, whereas much of my direct engagement with the Right is having the same handful of arguments repeated over and over. I don't need to hear much more from them to know what they believe. Also, I get their opinions shouted at me every day; I DREAM of the peace an echo chamber would bring.

    But I think stepping outside of one's echo chamber needs to be done with some intentionality. The Left's default is to read an article, the Right's is to pick a fight. But are either of these things actually teaching us what we need to know? Where are our misunderstandings, and what information do we need to correct them? My research doesn't involve a lot of talking with reactionaries because I did a lot of that and it stopped yielding results. If I want to understand what the Right believes - not what they *say* but what they *believe* - I need a wider context. So I read about fascism, about white supremacy, even about cults, and when I dip a toe back into the Right's rhetoric, it makes a different kind of sense.

    Basically what I'm saying is: when you step out of your echo chamber, have a strategy. And don't do it just because somebody guilted you, you probably won't learn anything that way.

    The writers either don't understand what made the earlier seasons good, or understand but can't replicate it. All they have left that they're competent at is battle scenes and portentously repeating lines from the good seasons. It all just reeks of what a 10-year-old thinks "grown-up stuff" looks like.

    Yeah, I've seen folks point out that, for people who grew up after the Cold War ended, "socialism" doesn't really conjure images of bread lines and dictators, and Republicans have done a bang-up job making "socialism" synonymous with free healthcare, universal basic income, job security, and environmental justice. You call everything that makes the world better "socialism" and socialism doesn't look so bad to people.

    The script didn't give her a ton of personality, so there is a grain of truth to the "unlikability" critique, but the only reason it's more than a minor complaint about an okay movie is misogyny. They settled on "unlikable" well before they saw the movie.

  74. Asking as someone who reluctantly voted for Clinton in 2016, if Biden is the democratic nominee, what would even be the point of voting? As his nomination becomes increasingly likely, I've been very frustrated that we have two right wing parties and I can't find any will to want to vote or participate at all

    I am disgusted at the very idea of Biden being President, but can we please - PLEASE - not pretend he'd be no better than Trump? Biden will not enact a Muslim ban. Biden will not try to repeal abortion. Biden will not make white nationalists feel empowered to murder people. Biden will not provoke a war with Iran by accident. These are hideously low bars and the fact that clearing them and nothing else is all Biden can offer us is depressing as hell, and, yes, Trump vs. Biden is essentially "do we want things to get bad fast or slow," but *slow is still better than fast*. And slow is easier than fast to bring to a stop.

    If it comes to it, I will hate every second of voting for Biden, but it will still beat the alternative.
