    I don't wanna get in the nitty gritty hear about when and how violence is justified, because we're getting dangerously close to saying "Oct. 7th was only bad because it didn't aid in the liberation effort," when terrorism is pretty unambiguously bad no matter what.

    but, again, Israel has been carrying out horrific violence against Palestine for its entire existence, so I'm not here to paint a equivalencies.

    terrorism is using violence to send a political message. killing actual opponents, combatants, figureheads, those are all forms of political violence that may or may not be justified depending on context, but they are not terrorism. terrorism is violence that serves little purpose beyond messaging. so: the killings that took place on Oct. 7th were terrorism. they were not strategic targets whose deaths might shift the balance of the conflict between Israel and Gaza, they were expressions of Palestinian rage. we could argue the hostage-taking could serve some political purpose (I dunno where that lands in the definition of terrorism), but the violence was taking revenge and instilling fear, pure and simple.

    whether violence-as-message is ever "justified" is a moral question, so my answer is ultimately an opinion. but, personally, I don't see how terrorism is ever justified. I feel like justified means it accomplishes SOMETHING. I'm a bleeding heart who always wants a nonviolent solution, and I wrestle with the reality that sometimes there isn't one, or that we allow MORE violence to happen while seeking a pacifist option than if we just merc'd some people. I have a hard time saying any violence is justified. but ANY argument I can think of for how violence may be justifiable, it always comes down to "did it accomplish something?" it absolutely does NOT come down to "did they deserve it?"

    I don't see any argument for terrorism other than "they deserved it," so I don't see how terrorism can be justified. for the same reason, I don't hear any justification for Israel's genocidal response to Oct. 7th than "they deserve it." I condemn Oct. 7th for the same reasons I condemn the genocide and the Nakba and the 70 years of apartheid occupation: there is no moral justification for this violence, and it is rationalized entirely through messaging, revenge, and instilling fear.

    but in any discussion of Israel and Palestine, we have to acknowledge which is the greater crime. I don't see how people can call Oct. 7th evil and then justify Israel committing the same evil every day for months with no end in sight. I don't see the moral calculation for that. the only argument is "well, you see, Israel DIDN'T deserve it, but Palestine DOES."

    I know examples of socialists becoming major parties through mobilizing and mass demonstration. I know examples of socialists taking power by force. I don't know any examples of liberal parties being "taken over" by leftists.

    American socialists could maybe pull off something like Northern Europe's Grand Compromise, where general strikes got so intense the government basically offered to meet the workers halfway, restructured a lot of their government, and from that point forward socialists have been one of the major parties. they didn't "take over" the liberal party, to my (limited) understanding, the libs are still libs, but leftists became major players without a revolution.

    they didn't get a socialist state, though. their countries are heavily socialized but they're still capitalist. I don't know any way to end capitalism by becoming one of the major parties. not saying it can't happen, or that my knowledge of history is such that I would know for sure it hasn't happened. I just haven't come across it so far.

    I'm sure the worst concert I ever went to was some set of high school bands at my local community center or cafe.

    the worst concert I've ever seen in a venue was this side project from Mike Patton, Kid 606, and the drummer from Hella. the set was entirely improvised, and felt like three people playing three completely different shows. Patton was on vocals doing his weird turkey noises, Kid 606 made unrelated beeps and boops, and the drummer played a bunch of polyrhythms. now and then Patton would start, I dunno, "conducting" the other two and he and the drummer would get in sync for something really energetic, and those parts were cool, but there were like 3 moments like that in a 90-minute set.

    came out thinking "Mike Patton is a genius" and "that show SUCKED."

    I feel simultaneously furious and numb. it just keeps happening. Arkane Austin made Prey. no one else is making immersive sims like that. Arkane Lyon seems to have pivoted to stuff like Deathloop, which is all well a good but I want Prey 2, or something else that feels like a high-budget successor to System Shock. I'm glad there are indie imsims hitting the market, and I hope some of the devs go solo like a lot of BioShock devs did when their studio closed. but this is goddamn endless. it doesn't matter how good the product or how successful the company, it will always be good for your stock price to lay people off.
