I see a lot of "after decades of RWers saying the humanities are worthless, we have an assload of people who think that the Nazi's were socialists" posts around and the next logical step is that this was intentional to make the victims of capitalism embrace it. But, I don't know how I could say this without sounding like a conspiracy theorists because I don't really have any real evidence of this. Do you think that denigrating the humanities was an intentional strategy by the right because their ideas couldn't last in an academic setting, and, if you do think this, what is the evidence?

    I think ignorance about Nazi politics is less a thing the Far Right planned than a thing they exploit. The Right denigrates the humanities for a number of ideological reasons, and the Far Right takes advantage of the degradations that benefit them the most.

  4. You've said in one of your kickstarter/patreon videos that people will have to work for free for a while before they can get paid on the internet. Do you think, as an indie game dev, free work spent modding a video game can count towards the credibility other free work is supposed to build?

    Sure, but how far that will take you depends on what you're trying to do with the experience. Modding can lead to a job or a successful crowdfunding campaign, but how much money it can make you on Kickstarter really depends on both how impressive and how accessible the mods are. If you've made a mod that's difficult to install or is on a game that not that many people have, it's harder for people to check out your work, which makes them warier about giving you money. That may not matter if footage of it looks awesome. There are just a lot of variables.

    Class and race are deeply related but not inseparable. Creating a classless society will not, in and of itself, solve racism.

  7. Has there been any (so-called) "chick flick" that had long lasting impression on you?

    It's kind of the opposite of a chick flick, but there's a 2000 gay romcom called The Broken Hearts Club that had a big impact on me. I was like 15 and my parents had raised me with the vague liberal notion that gay men were just like everyone else and that's why you shouldn't be homophobic. The Broken Hearts Club was a fairly shapeless movie about the love lives and exploits of a group of gay friends, but it was the first time I'd ever been compelled to consider "gay culture." That being gay actually meant something different, societally, from being straight. That the problems gay men would face would be different from mine. That their lives would have many similar and some different priorities. That accepting yourself as gay could be such an important moment that it could define your twenties.

    I'm not gay, and can't vouch for how accurately the movie describes West Hollywood gay culture - it was written and directed by a gay man and based on his own group of friends, though it was cast almost entirely with straight actors - but having a view into a walk of life that was like mine but, in a few ways, extremely different, was fascinating to me. I think it was a big step towards realizing that culture was not a monolith, that many different ways of existing were valid, and that you didn't need to be the same as someone to find them interesting or sympathetic.

    I dunno if that movie was good but I'm really glad I watched it when I did.

    Anything that you would like to recommend to us from him?

    I really like DFW's essays, though I know of a number of problems with him. (He was apparently shitty to women and his essay on David Lynch says some truly dipshit things about race.) Also his writing style is very pretentious and neurotic, which rubs a lot of people the wrong way. I have a pretty high tolerance for pretense and neurosis, but DFW tests even MY limits.

    His essay Greatly Exaggerated, on The Death of the Author, was instrumental in the writing of The Artist is Absent, and I really like his piece on math and tennis as well. Both are in the collection A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again. And, while I didn't finish it, his longer work on math, Everything and More: A Compact History of Infinity, was really lovely until I had to return it to the library.

    There was a blog post a while back that quite a few people I follow shared, and it had about half a paragraph from Why Are You So Angry in it, uncredited. I called the writer out in the comments, they said something like, "haha, I've watched that video so many times," then quietly rewrote the paragraph to give attribution and deleted my comment. That was irritating.

    I also recently found someone had reuploaded This Is Phil Fish, but it had like 17 views so I'm not super fussed.

    I would recommend ANY kind of therapy for someone who has developed suicidal urges. Face-to-face is ideal, but it can take a while to get an intake appointment. Use phones, email, text, or crisis centers if you need help sooner than that.

    I've been watching your videos on YouTube for a long time now (been subscribed since "This is Phil Fish"), and I def think your work on the Alt Right Playbook is some of your best. In fact, I've used the insight from that series to help combat Alt Right viewpoints held by my extended family and coworkers. And because you've helped me so much before, I'm hoping you'll help me now, because the Alt Right says James Gunn should be punished by the public for all the awful things he said in the past, and I think I'm falling for it.

    I didn't know anything about Gunn before this controversy, and neither did my friends. But even from the start, I knew this was an "op" from the worst part of the internet. And when all my favorite movie celebrities and YouTubers started #RehireJamesGunn, I was fully on board. "We can't let them win, or else it'll be Patton Oswalt and Kathleen Kennedy next!" This is what I believed when I went to a dinner party this past weekend.

    And at that party the Gunn thing came up, and I picked up my power-liberal, sjw-and-proud-of-it megaphone and tried to save my friends from getting duped. I went through every major point: it's an "op", he apologized, different person now, etc. At the end of my spiel, one of my friends (whom I know has dealt very directly with child sexual abuse) pulled up an article and began to read tweet after disgusting tweet.

    The anger in her voice... I heard her words catch at one point as she choked back the bile the tweets brought up. She also clearly didn't want to get so frustrated at a casual evening, but it was very clear that she felt she needed to represent all the victims of Gunn's "jokes". And she felt she needed to represent them because, dammit, I WASN'T.

    My question is: is there a way to both fail this new Alt Right play and be a voice for all those people hurt by Gunn's words? I want don't want any of these channers to feel like they can get someone fired if they just did far enough, and obviously any distaste I have for Gunn is several degrees below what I have for Cernovich. But if a proper child advocacy group had brought this up instead, I'd most likely have #FireJamesGunn tweets instead. Is the way this evidence was brought to light enough to warrant a mistrial in the case of Gunn?

    I would say a defense of James Gunn should make it clear that condemning the op that got him fired does not mean approval of the comments he made. Gunn's jokes were fucked up and clearly hurtful.

    But, like, would you really have joined a #FireJamesGunn movement over tweets? Gunn didn't *do* any of the things he joked about; he didn't abuse anybody, he didn't harass anybody. The idea that he should suffer the same consequences as the people outed by #MeToo - in fact, suffer worse consequences than most of them - is very extreme. Gunn had apologized for those jokes years before he even got the GotG gig. I don't know what more a person can do to make amends for fucked up tweets.

    It's also worth keeping in mind that your friend probably never would have been hurt by those tweets if Mike Cernovich hadn't dug them in the first place. I doubt a person with that kind of trauma was following Gunn when he was making "edgy" movies for Troma.

    I've never been a fan of Gunn. There's a rape scene played for laughs in Super that I think is fucking abhorrent. I'm not invested in him getting his job back because I think he's a great dude. But EVERYONE should be ashamed of who they were ten years ago, because that's what growth *is*. I think what's important is how we deal with what we're ashamed of. It's your job to grow as an artist and make amends. If we take the stance that anyone who transgresses, even only in the form of words, is disallowed from making art, well, we're not gonna have any more artists.

  29. Hey, I happened to find your Alt-Right Playbook videos and really liked them, so I went back and started watching your earlier videos, including your Why Are You So Angry videos. In that series, you mentioned Ian Miles Cheong being a target of GG harassment. I'd never really paid attention to him before because I only became aware of him through people debunking and making fun of some of his ignorant tweets. If I were asked about him, I would have lumped him in with the alt-right.

    Did I misread or misinterpret something? Did he switch sides for some reason since you made those videos? Or was he always on the right and just happened to not like GG? Is there anywhere I can go to look this stuff up that won't have been touched by GGers?

    I don't even know if he's worth the effort to research, but it just surprised me that much to see his name on a list of GG victims.

    I've answered this before but it was ages ago: IMC was a reformed edgelord who went and un-reformed himself. I think the official story is he read a critical review of a game he liked (or a positive review of a game he hated) that discussed social justice and that tipped him over the edge. My suspicion - and always take suspicions with a lot of salt - is that he was only ever looking for a community that would give him approval and found catering to edgelords the easier method.

    He is now consistently the biggest dipshit on Twitter.

    So, many ask you for advice on how to talk to people on the right. Do you have any suggestions for talking to people who see themselves as part of an "apolitical" and "sane" center? Because, as that thread shows, it can be just as frustrating!

    Well, for one, don't do it in a YouTube thread.

    Trying to remain "apolitical" around issues of fascism and racism is, in fact, a pretty radical stance, because it means you will allow things to continue going in whatever direction they are going and not interfere. However "sane" they think they're being, they are taking a position. And it's the kind of position that doesn't change from a single argument with a stranger.

    If you're going to discuss this stuff pubicly, don't target the person, target the audience. Direct your comments to the people reading the thread, not the person making the bullshit claims, and focus on putting their comments into context and rebutting them. If they say bullshit that's not worth responding to, state that you're not going to respond to it and don't go down the rabbit hole.

    Keep in mind this always runs the risk of getting them riled up and leading to worse and worse behavior, which is why it's better to not involve them at all. Write something on your own platform and link to it, or ask a moderator (me, in this case) to block the person so you can discuss their arguments without interference.

    By and large, don't try to change the minds of people that you do not have a relationship with, because you are not the person who is able to reach them. Focus on damage control.

    There may be better ways of reaching a person's intended audience without involving them, I'm still researching the problem, but these are some of my guesses as to what might work.

  42. Most people I know seem jaded about the possibility of a Trump N-word tape because, after all, he admitted to sexual assault on tape and still won. While I don't disagree, i think it's still important that he lost the popular vote by a huge margin, and the swing states he won were won by razor thin margins. I think the Access Hollywood tape definitely damaged him. His base is small and, despite their near fanatical support, most of the country either hates him or or is very close to hating him. I think it's very possible a Trump N-word tape could come out and do not damage, but do you think that it could possibly be more damaging than we might realize?

    (I also think it's important that while most white Americans don't understand systemic issues, polls suggest that most of them understand that slurs are unacceptable).

    Everything horrible Trump does, his advocates try to normalize. Even when they deny that he assaulted women, they also try to argue that "if you're a star they let you do it" means, not that it happened but EVEN IF IT HAD it would have been consensual.

    So I think the question here is: Is there a point beyond which this won't work? A lot of white folks in this country are acting like the n-word is the Rubicon, he absolutely could not possibly have said that. Let's leave aside that Trump is unequivocally a racist even if he's never used the n-word; let's just accept that this is where white folks have arbitrarily drawn a line. (I'm not sure why putting Mexican kids in cages and charging taxpayers $750 per day per kid for the privilege WASN'T where they drew the line, but we're not talking about that right now.)

    If audio comes out of Trump saying the n-word, some - possibly most - if his advocates will try to normalize that, too. And if they fail, it could mean serious repercussions for him. But if they succeed? If this goes the same route as everything else Trump has done, his fanbase saying "it's probably faked" is our best-case scenario. We're going to see people saying he probably said it ironically, or saying his Black friends were OK with it, or saying it's good that he's not PC, or saying that every white person does it in private and it's not that big a deal, or saying that the n-word just means the worst possible type of person alive and may not even have been referring to a white person*.

    And if a decent chunk of Trumpkins accept this rationalization, things are going to get a lot worse.

    Funny thing is, I block people AFTER I hear their opinion, not before. The idea that the only way to know what the Right's beliefs are is to have them shouted at you is laughable. I am hearing the Right's opinions all day every day on every platform they have. Like, I LITERALLY RESEARCH THEM.

    I hold to the belief that the block button is a tool, use it as you will. Your Twitter feed, your Slack channel, your Patreon page, your YouTube comment section, they are YOUR spaces, and you have every right to curate them as you please.

    The Right's ideas are not so nuanced that you need to hear every single phrasing of the same handful of arguments to be informed.

    So much of what is wrong in this country is traceable back to Reagan, but I have to acknowledge the possibility that, if it hadn't been Reagan, it would have been someone else. We had a country where a lot of people wanted what Reagan provided; maybe electing someone like Reagan was guaranteed. Maybe anyone the Republicans elected would have slowly become a Reagan to satisfy his base.

    I don't know. Reagan was inevitable after Goldwater, W was inevitable after Reagan, Trump was inevitable after W. Much as I despise all these men, perhaps the blame lies with the culture that elected them.

    But, damn, do I hate Reagan.

    I have a partial answer, though I doubt that it explains everything.

    Liberalism is largely built around tolerance of differing viewpoints and trying to find compromises. This is also (one of) the ideas behind the original framing of American democracy. (Not to discount the many conflicting framings that were about subjugation of women and non-whites, I'm not trying to praise the Founding Fathers here!)

    So liberals tend to function assuming everyone is arguing in good faith and that a compromise will benefit everyone, you just have to put in the work to find it. They kind of short-circuit when someone argues in bad faith, when someone has no interest in compromise and simply wants to steamroll the competition, when someone has views that are not worth tolerating. They seem to keep thinking, "Well, jeez, if we aren't finding a compromise maybe I just need to work harder at it." They have zero framework for being an opposition party.

    This is not to deny the usual reasons: That most Democrats have the usual possessive investments in whiteness, sexism, capitalism, and hegemony, and are therefore hesitant to agitate against those things in the Far Right because any material consequences would be felt by both parties. My answer above is trying to account for how, even allowing for all that, they STILL shoot themselves in the foot.

    Ah.

    Well, if you monetize through Patreon or Drip, you can host your work anywhere. Nothing compares to YouTube for viewership, but you can always put stuff on Vimeo and direct people to it through your social media. You probably won't go viral that way, but you might at least find the people most interested in what you're saying.
