in response to Wouldn't you agree that there should be more people attracted to the allure of cryptocurrencies? I mean it's a pure peer-to-peer version of electronic cash that would allow payments to be sent without involving a financial institution, hence reducing the risk for fraud. They would offer a system for non-reversible electronic transactions that doesn’t rely on trust. The ability to conduct transactions without government spying, taxation, and seizures. Cryptos would serve as a hedge against inflation and the worthless “printing press money” that governments produce.

I'm trying to imagine an economy where the only people you ever trade with are people you trust. I don't think such a society would need money at all. certainly no such economy has existed in centuries outside of tiny communities.

(same anon) no i don't. i mean the strain of anarchism that embraces markets but rejects capitalism. it's a broad, heterogenous thing, and it's got origins in american individualist anarchism, the mutualism of proudhon, and left tendencies in american libertarianism. check out C4SS. the people i find most interesting in that sphere are kevin carson and william gillis. the book 'markets not capitalism' is also a decent introduction, although as far as i understand, it's aimed more at drawing right libertarians to the left that at convincing lefties about markets.

in response to how familiar are you with left wing market anarchism? imo it's a perspective that's worth engaging with if you're a leftie of any stripe, even if you don't end up adopting it.

    Ian replied:

mm. I am not familiar with that strain of anarchism and, while not opposed to markets as a concept, I'm skeptical of any movement that puts them front-and-center as a core concept. but I'll give it a look whenever I get round to reading anarchist theory.

Oh yeah, but I'm talking about divisions among different types of Jewish Israelis.

What I'm saying is that even under Spencer's ideal conditions, there would still be a lot of problems with getting different types of people who have very different and deep-rooted ideas of what it means to live a moral life to co-exist.

in response to The weirdest thing I've seen anybody say about Israel is Richard Spencer's quote that it's an example of a state designed to prevent strife between different groups of people (because they allow citizenship based on ethnicity). The only way you could genuinely believe that is if you're *profoundly* ignorant of the divisions that exist in Israeli society.

    Ian replied:

oh yes, but even that is somewhat by design. white supremacy defines itself in opposition to all other races/ethnicities. if you get rid of everyone who isn't white, and there are still divisions, you just define whiteness a little more narrowly and make a group you can't work with the new "non-white enemy." rinse and repeat.

well, Richard Spencer wants similar laws in the US and wants to treat Black people the same way Israel treats Palestinians. so, possibly he's well aware of what's happening there and considers a state of ongoing ethnic violence to be "preventing strife," because it's only strife if the "wrong" people are the victims.

Outside of class activities most of my peers just ignored me. Honestly I'm a little surprised no one tried messing with me. Perhaps I was just too boring for anyone to be interested in. I suspect I have a particular lesser known personality disorder.

But, like, I understand your own experiences were very different and gave you a different outlook on the behavior of children. I suppose it's worth asking this question:

What do you think can be done to promote good environments for children to grow up in such that they value kindness, empathy, and cooperation?

in response to I was admittedly a loner in high school. I didn't have friends and I never sought them out. So I'm sure I missed lots of stuff. But remember that what you said was that "most children are monsters to each other". For all I know that's an accurate claim for your generation and things are different for my generation. Maybe I got really lucky or you got really unlucky. Also worth noting that I grew up upper middle class. But at the end of the day, its not rational to rely on personal anecdotes when making claims about populations of people. I value empirical evidence. It's probably most productive to look at studies conducted on the subject. What I think is true is that how children treat one another is heavily influenced by their environments. Children from my generation were far less racist than children who grew up in the 40s and 50s, for example.

    Ian replied:

for what it's worth, I'm not extrapolating only from my own experience, it's the experience of everyone I knew growing up, in person and online, as well as every adult I have ever met who talked about their childhood, and every kid I worked with when I was an educator. it's also part of the text of every single high school movie ever made. I would call it a safe assumption. yes, we could look up studies, but I find it odd your assumption would be "assume it's the way *I* remember it til proven otherwise," like the burden of proof is on the person who says bullying is a thing.

to change it we would need to make school - and home life - less authoritarian. you teach kids that everything has to be ordered in a hierarchy where they have to submit to the power of their parents/adults, no questions asked, they're gonna try to recreate those structures in their own lives.

this has become a very silly conversation

if someone tells you "I don't think you should exist" yes they're are probably threatening you and I'm pretty sure you would take it as such, so no you should probably not say it to someone you aren't trying to threaten

"aren't allowed" doesn't come into it, I'm just saying what's gonna happen if you talk like that

    Ian replied:

you are a person trying to exist in the modern world. you deserve to have your needs met, and you deserve material comforts. in our current system, both require money, and the only way to get money is to participate in an unethical system. everyone has to do a balancing act of how much participation in that system they are comfortable with, how many needs/comforts they will go without to reduce participation. everyone has to draw their own lines. while there are things that are pretty clearly acceptable and things that are pretty clearly bootlicking, you have to draw your line in the ambiguous middle, and there's no clear "correct" place to draw it.

if you take that job, some will say you've drawn it too close to the bootlicking side, and some will say you've made a reasonable compromise. myself, I wouldn't say I *like* it, but I would say it's shy of bootlicking. others will disagree.

    Ian replied:

I don't think anyone responded to Nazism or Italian fascism or the Khmer Rouge by saying "Germany/Italy/Cambodia shouldn't exist." Israel should not be a theocratic ethnostate. and, yes, it's creation required taking land that other people lived on, but so did mine? so did most countries? not defending it, but it's fascinating how people say "a country founded on displacement and colonialism should be eradicated" ONLY about Israel.

the fact is, for all the fucked up political reasons behind it, Israel *exists*, and we need to contend with what it is, and what it's doing. I don't have answers as to how - the two state solution looks less viable every year - but I also don't have answers to how the US should pay reparations to African Americans or give land back to Native Americans, but I know they are right things to do.

but first let's not pretend these things are simple, or that "shouldn't exist" is a framework you can implement without further displacement and atrocity.

    Do you support Israel

    Ian replied:

"support Israel" serves as a metonym for a number of things, some of which I support and some of which I do not.

Israel is the self-appointed sovereign nation of the Jewish people, so "support Israel" sometimes means "support Jews." I do support Jews, and oppose antisemitism.

Israel is a nation with citizens, including the Palestinians, as well as a number of Christians and Muslims, so "support Israel" sometimes means standing in solidarity with the diverse range of people who live there. I do support those people.

Israel is also a theocratic government that uses the military support of the US to commit atrocities on the Gaza Strip, so "support Israel" sometimes means defending colonialism and displacement of Palestinians. I do not support the Israeli government's actions, nor my country's backing of them, and stand in solidarity with Palestine, as well the Israeli citizens and Jewish diaspora who condemn these actions done in their name.

Israel is also considered by some (read: Nazis) to be a religious ethnostate, so "support Israel" sometimes means believing other nations should follow suit. I do not support ethnostates nor agree with Nazis.

Israel is also a political powderkeg whose origins and political history are fraught and complicated and riddled with violence, so "support Israel" sometimes means agreeing with the circumstances under which it came into being. I have no friggin' idea where to fall on that one.

out out of curiosity, when you asked "do you support Israel," which way did you mean it?

this is a great question because it kinda assumes people were anarchists because Marx just hadn't come along yet, when in fact the earliest explicitly anarchist European theorists were contemporaries of Marx and they sparred frequently in their various published works. even if you consider Marx's writings the definitive conclusions to those 19th century debates, anarchism as a theoretical and practical political tradition has continued to grow and branch out extremely widely since the deaths of those early theorists

or no, maybe actually the whole tradition is dead and we've all just been "hanging on" to those ideas because we never ran into the writings of the most famous political theorist in human history. christ. twitter marxists read a book challenge (impossible)

in response to Why do you hang on to anarchism when Marx was against it?

    Ian replied:

the conflict between Marx's communism and Bakunin's anarchism is pretty well documented!

yeah I'm not trying to save the environment or bring any economic justice to help them, I'm helping my damn self and my allies not get fucked by conservatives. the fact that it ALSO helps them is incidental.

I saw on your twitter that if it moves on with removing the block function you're planning on moving to mastodon over bluesky. but I'm surprised since I remember you expressing that you didn't like its main idea of decentralization, something about it would allow fascists to create a space for themselves uncontested. Did you change your mind on it? Apologies if I'm misremembering it. as you know, curiouscat doesn't have a search feature

    Ian replied:

I don't remember saying that, but I can't promise I didn't! I have been critical of sites like Gab for their lack of moderation, and it's possible I thought Mastodon was the same. I now know, from friends on Mastodon, that decentralized moderation IS A THING and it's not perfect but works at least as well if not better than the centralized apps. seems more server dependent, but I've got leads on some good servers.

How do you think QAnon is going to react to the Trump indictments over the coming months? You could kind of conceptualize this from their perspective as "the Storm" but in reverse, that the Cabal is coming for Trump and his allies, and I worry how thats going to stir up thier followers now that he's faacing the tangiable prospect of actual real prison time.

    Ian replied:

I don't predict the future, but I can predict behavior? this may be an inflection point for some, where their conspiracism runs headlong into reality and they have to face facts. normally I'd be skeptical of this, but we're talking about authoritarians, and authoritarians often respond to The Authorities stepping in. you are correct that some will blame The Cabal, and I imagine some will try and claim this is part of Trump's plan. whoever is writing the q drops these days may have some influence over which of these three wins out for the community as a whole. and, if none is a clear victor, we might see qanon fragment.

I won't guess as to which outcome is likeliest.

    Ian replied:

hammer and sickle isn't necessarily supportive of Marxist-Leninism! that was Stalin's philosophy, instituted after Lenin's death. hammer and sickle were also symbols of the revolution and the USSR under Lenin, which, despite their flaws, were closer to the socialism I envision.

but: if you're a tankie, than the shirt is a tankietop.
