    eh? it's probably true that my racing thoughts have led to some ideas that I may not have had otherwise. but keep in mind: most ADHD meds are stimulants. they're not like antidepressants that build up in your system over time. they last 8ish hours and then start to wear off. there is a morning and evening every day where I am unmedicated. you can also skip days if you want - this has recently been recommended to me because skipping a day can make the first day back on more potent, and it's good to have an emergency stockpile if the stimulant shortage continues.

    in my experience, I feel me creativity has been improved by medication, for the most part. it's easier to follow a thought further without going off on other tangents. but, if your creativity and ADHD are tied, there are ways to modulate your usage and get best of both worlds.

When writing my post, I was spurred al by "unsure about getting a diagnosis" and that got me caught up in my own struggles to even Seek Care At All. This post you've made is making me think about how one of the earliest places I went to had a community subsidy fund that paid for my first few months of sessions since I didn't have a job at the time, which I was hella thankful for.     yeah, you can't get an ADHD diagnosis from regular therapy, it requires a very expensive set of tests. similar for an OFFICIAL autism diagnosis, and I think certain other diagnoses as well. some of them, an OFFICIAL diagnosis may not be critical - if you and your therapist think you have autism or OCD there are ways you can start working on it together, diagnosis be danged. but, because they're a controlled substance, you CANNOT get ADHD meds without a very expensive assessment.

    uhhh... it's complicated.

    there are some ways that ADHD is a handicap solely because capitalism demands a certain type of repetitive, not-terribly-interesting labor, and that puts people with ADHD at a disadvantage. these are ways I wish the world were different.

    there are other ways I think ADHD makes me behave in ways that I don't like. blurting out my thoughts without enough filter, having an intense fear of rejection, having trouble focusing on what people are saying - these are all ways I want to be different, for my own sake, and meds help with that a lot.

    and there's work I want to do, that makes me happy, and my ADHD gets in the way of doing it. it's also what makes me money. so that's a mix.

    obviously, I functioned for 38 years without medication, and I accomplished a lot in that time! but the symptoms had gotten pretty bad by the time I got medicated, and it's hard to imagine functioning like that again without them.

    basically I wanna say that "functioning normally" is a complicated concept and I dislike the ways the deck is stacked against me, but also I like what I can do while on my meds, and the ways I can think, and don't ever want to go off them again.

    hard to say what I was and wasn't aware of at the time. I've learned more about it over the years and my brain likes to project new knowledge backwards into earlier memories. I think I knew that it happened and saw photos? and I had the sense that it was a big deal. but I didn't know who did it, or why, or what building was targeted. I also don't think I understood that this kind of domestic terrorism was uncommon. "Oklahoma City," "Waco," and "the Unabomber" were all terms that floated around in the 90's that I didn't have a lot of context for, but I generally knew it was people getting kinda extreme and shooting/blowing up other folks. I don't think I fully understood that they were three different things?

    I've heard this argument before, and it's such an odd and intriguing worldview. it reminds me of this guy I knew who rejected evolution because he felt, if evolution is real, then the only logical endpoint of it would be social Darwinism, and, since social Darwinism is obviously evil, evolution couldn't be true.

    now, we don't have time to unpack ALL of that (short version: evolution is real and social Darwinism is not its logical endpoint), it was fascinating to see someone reject evidence purely because it would lead, in their opinion, to a philosophically offensive conclusion. the idea that the world MUST be philosophically just, and any reality that implies it is otherwise must be false. it's the same as arguing geocentrism because the idea that God didn't make the Earth the center of the universe is too painful to consider.

    my ancestors committed heinous crimes for personal gain, plundered the spoils, and have held them so tightly that generations of people have suffered so their descendants can prosper. as one of those descendants, I often feel ways about that, as any sane person would. you have made the astute observation that this bears some similarities to a Christian doctrine of guilt. this could open a vein of philosophical inquiry into how humans use guilt as a motivator, and under what circumstances that happens, or the differences between a religious concept built around a wrong founded in myth that can only be righted by lifelong fealty to a religious figure and rewarded in death vs. a historical fact that is public knowledge, heavily documented, and whose effects we can see daily with out own eyes, and which can literally be undone by human effort such that future generations would not need to feel it any longer.

    consider it this way: I'm not afraid of cops. I know there are reasons to be, but a cop has never done anything to me to make me feel afraid. I've dealt with cops on ego trips who wanna act tough because I ran a stop sign and I have to show them deference, but I know they're going to let me off with a warning, so it's just masking my annoyance. I've bullshit my way out of trouble when one nearly caught me having sex in my van. logically, I know the danger they pose, and that I am not immune to it, but that is not an emotional response.     I know my guilt isn't helping anyone. I don't feel guilty because I'm "supposed" to. Invading Nazi Germany when it was doing the Holocaust even if it wasn't invading other countries or Turkey when it was doing the Armenian genocide would be the right thing to do, not imperialism.
