  3. at least from what you've talked about in your videos, your wheelhouse is mostly adventure games and shooters, are there any games you've really enjoyed that aren't in your wheelhouse? are there any that come to mind that you might like to talk about in a video?

    yeah! I used to be pretty genre-agnostic with games, especially when I had shitty hardware and was only playing low-spec freeware indie stuff. I have been sticking to favorites lately because I don't have as much time and energy for games as I used to. I can only keep up with so much so I keep to my priorities. I'm sure I've also gotten less adventuresome in my middle age, not as willing to spend time with something I don't enjoy, and I stick to what I already know I love. but I also love metroidvanias and hard platformers and beat 'em ups and hard-to-define genre experiments. I discovered I like immersive sims a couple years ago but haven't really dug into the genre because they tend to be pretty big games and I get daunted by the time sink.

    but I'll talk about anything I have something to say about.

    when any kind of gun legislation gets floated by the Democrats, the entire gun-loving Right immediately rallies (usually at the behest of the NRA) and starts calling their reps in Congress *incessantly* until every Republican comes out against it. people who work for members of Congress report that their bosses are TERRIFIED of angry constituents, and the Left doesn't come CLOSE to hounding their reps as much as the Right does.

    I wish we could mobilize that quickly and sustain energy that long.

    I'm no broker, but I think, technically, that money was only hypothetical. he had stocks that were valuated at billions, but he have to actually sell them to get the money. so that money is still in the pockets of whomever he might've sold to.

    the wacky thing about wealth, though, is he can use those assets as collateral. banks and investors will give him money based on those stocks even if the money isn't actually in his possession.

    fascism is an intersection of a lot of different things - the reliance on bigotry to sell a notion of national purity, a broad and popular support for the abandonment of democracy, violence against the state's designated enemies both internally and abroad, the attempted eradication of the individual and complete sublimation to The Party - that are a lot broader than bigotry itself. any bigotry can get rolled into fascism, but so far kahanists have never been in position to create a fascist state. it is still bigotry and should be condemned. I'm afraid I'm not qualified to say whether it should be considered antisemitic.

    Cuban exiles are a pretty broad population that I don't know a ton about. like, that's everything from wealthy capitalists who fled because they didn't want to live in an equal economy to queer people who were thrown out because they'd be jailed or murdered if they stayed. I confess I don't know a ton about Cuba, something I would like to rectify when I can make space in my research for it. I am generally opposed to the violent suppression of minorities and not particularly fussed about the plights of wealthy people; beyond that, I can't say much of value right now.

    it's worth noting that *all* bigotries get rolled into fascism. there has never been a pro-woman fascism, a pro-gay fascism, a trans-inclusive fascism. homosexuals and Jehovah's Witnesses were rounded up in Germany same as the Jews. and some fascisms have leaned less on race than others - Mussolini's Italy didn't resort to racism until it decided to invade parts of Africa, focusing mostly on Marxists and ethnic minorities like Slovenes til then.

    fascism molds itself to the local, prevailing bigotries of wherever it springs up, so I suspect racism is so common because, well... we live in a pretty racist world.

    fascism is a reactionary politics: it arises in response to movements on the Left. when societies start to drift in socially progressive and economically Left directions, the priorities of the nation change. socialism's focus on "the worker" transcends national boundaries: it implies that all workers are bound up in the same struggle, and have been throughout history. it places them in opposition to the people in power - kings and politicians - who have often been representative of the nation. and, while socialism has a loooooooong history of bigotries of its own, the *rhetoric* of socialism, with its rejection of hierarchies and its commitment to worker solidarity, is appealing to social minorities. it would be wrong to claim that most leftist groups in the early 20th century were socially progressive - they were not - but most feminist and anti-racist movements were pretty leftist at the time.

    and this internationalist, cross-strata philosophy drifts away from the old unifying narratives of "the nation" and "the people." but those ideas still have power, at least for the time. and fascists arrive to capitalize on what charge those ideas still have.

    the African slave trade, the genocide of Native Americans, the Opium wars, the Crusades - racism has shaped the world more than most philosophies. it's nearly on par with religion. so when fascism reaches for a unifying narrative, it's pretty much guaranteed that racism will have the most charge.

    the question of how to reconcile suffering with belief in a loving God has been wrestled with for millennia, and there are about ten thousand answers. much of the New Testament is all about how life on Earth is full of pain and oppression, and how to live with it, how to help each other through it, and the promise that we will be rewarded in Heaven if we do not become cruel like our oppressors.

    I believe one can be forgiving but also have a choice in when, how, and whom they forgive. I have seen people from the GamerGate era "turn over a new leaf" and then backslide, or get the boost to their brand but continue to make fucked up content that is just a few notches less reactionary. everyone draws their own thresholds for being convinced, and, if AA is really on this path, then he'll cross it for most people in time. but he's also not owed forgiveness from the people he impacted? like, even if I believe he's a better person, he was still a major figure in a hate movement that drove multiple people I know from their homes. like, if he's serious about being a better person, than he accepts that some bridges are burnt beyond repair. and, if he or his fans don't accept that, then they haven't progressed as much as they think.
