    I follow some reviewers whose opinions I respect, mostly alums from The Dissolve. Also look at the reviews on Polygon and Paste sometimes. If I read a review that has a particularly interesting perspective I try to follow the reviewer on Twitter or Letterboxd. And if I'm curious about a movie I'll look it up on Metacritic and see the spread of opinions on it.

    It helps a lot that I am working in a medium I care about and making stuff I'm proud of. I often wish I could write or edit like some of my peers, but I have some things I CAN do and I do them. That feels pretty good.

    socialism can be implemented a lot of ways! it can be anything from turning all the businesses into worker-run co-ops and replacing representative elections with citizen councils, or it can be the total eradication of currency and private property. figuring out which specific flavor of post-capitalism I'd want to implement is an ongoing process, and when I have a more solidified answer I'll be happy to share it. at this stage I can say I'm not a fan of Soviet-style Marxist-Leninism, where in massive amounts of power are consolidated into the state, and think calling it "socialism" is dubious.

    House of Leaves is the most IN YOUR FACE example I know, and you can read other stuff by Danielewski if you want more like that. you might look into Nabakov's Pale Fire if you want that narrative spread across footnotes, or Delany's Dhalgren if you want weird formatting with multiple threads running concurrently (though it only does that in the final section).

    I don't know a ton of the history, but the Nordic model came about due to economic crises and a lot of labor uprisings and strikes, eventually leading to the "grand compromise" between leftist and capitalist groups. I don't see that happening in the US simply by electing Democrats; we'd need that strong, mobilized Leftist movement demanding something more radical before the compromise of social democracy could be reached. with the the US's HIGHLY mobilized right flank and comparatively disorganized and disempowered Left, it's harder to picture how it would happen. and, as a leftist, if we had a highly mobilized Left, I would ask why we should stop at a compromise? let's take it all the way to socialism, baby.

  37. How useful is calling or messaging your local congressmen to try to enact change? Is it even worth it at all?

    Depends on who your representative is. My representatives are Warren, Markey, and Pressley, so there's not a lot I need to convince them of. But, if you have reps whose opinions need to be changed, yeah, they respond to being hassled. One of the reasons we can't get gun legislation passed in this country is, every time it's up for debate, the gun nuts call Congress every single day until they get their way. It's the closest things citizens have to being lobbyists.

    To be effective, you have to call a lot, and you have to have a lot of friends do the same. Worth setting up a phone tree or something.

    I'm not sure about "favorite," but what comes to mind is this Olafur Eliasson installation where he bathed a room in this particular yellow light and hung curtains on all the doors so it was the only light in the room. It nullified all the other color in the room, so it was like you'd stepped into a sepia photograph. There was a pretty big crowd that day, and everyone, regardless of what their outfits were, were rendered in shades of grey and yellow.

    For some reason, this one girl's pink hair resisted the effect and still looked pink. I was there with my best friend, and she looked at this girl and muttered, "Photoshop."

    From what we know, it looks like there was a pretty wide variance. Tribal societies are free to evolve in a number of directions, so some were very egalitarian, and some were very hierarchical. I believe, on average, most were more communal than we are today, which implies communal behavior is, generally, more successful than hierarchical, but neither is more "innate" than the other.

    Do keep in mind, however, that it is not a subject I have researched extensively and this is what I've picked up a few chapters of books on other subjects.

    It is absolutely not something everyone needs to experience. Asexual people especially should never feel pressured to have it.

    We don't need to place an objective value on sex. Like, at this point, it's not even necessary for the perpetuation of the species; with in vitro and artificial insemination, the species would continue even if no one ever had sex again. So all that really matters is what it means to you as an individual.

    Sex is important to me, but it doesn't need to be important to you.

    the US keeps sending people back to work and refusing to pay them a living wage to stay home, because these are not in keeping with capitalism. nations that are not so driven by the profit motive are better able to control the spread.

    I used to use PayPal for this but it's linked to my personal email and someone was able to find it through the receipt, so I cancelled it. I should probably set up a Ko-Fi or CashApp or something for one-time donations but I still haven't.     It's not a ranking, it's an example of a horrible thing white people did to Muslims. The fact that it was based on stealing another religion's holy land, lasted centuries, and at one point sent children to die on the battlefield is reason enough to include.
