  6. I think the point this person is trying to make is that the term “racism” was not used to describe these power structures until 1967 when the concept of institutional racism was coined. Systemic and institutional racism were mostly discussed using that term only in activist and sociological circles until a popular pamphlet was published in 1978. Meanwhile, most (admittedly white oriented, but some media made by black people too) popular culture used the term racism to refer to individual acts of prejudice. To this day I have heard Black people I know call people who say and do bigoted and prejudiced things as racists, i.e. racism as an individual phenomenon. In the last decade, the definition of racism as systemic racism has broken through, but the individual definition is still in use among people of all races.

  10. Any advice for zoomers on college, like should you pick community College College for low cost or go straight to a university or skip college all together

    to the best of my knowledge, in pure financial terms college is still worth it. the increase in salary for a college grad is large enough to offset student loan debt, on average. HOWEVER: the margin by with it's worth it is shrinking every year, as loans get bigger and wages stagnate.

    I can tell you not having a degree during the Recession was REALLY rough, and is the main reason I was flat broke for most of my twenties. I can also tell you that being in debt for decades is often soul-crushing. generally, if all you're after is the piece of paper and the better wages, go to an affordable local school. (Don't do community college unless you're planning to transfer to a 4-year or have a specific trade in mind that an Associate's degree will suffice for. It won't help your wages as much for most jobs.) if I had gone to San Francisco State, I would've graduated on time and gotten through the Recession without going on food stamps. instead I went to art school in Oakland and dropped out senior year because my family couldn't afford $36k a year anymore.

    but I can also say that college is kinda rad? I mean, if you go to the right one. finishing up at MassArt in my late twenties/early thirties was pretty awesome. but that was a time in my life when I knew what I wanted to do and what skills would help me do it. I enjoyed it a lot more than when I was just doing what you're supposed to do after high school.

    anyway. don't have a concrete answer on this. college is in many ways a scam this is still sort of necessary.

    what are you talking about? I've never claimed cancel culture isn't a thing and I talked at length on here and elsewhere about the way people like Lindsay and Natalie are mistreated. if you know what I could've done to help, please pass it along, because I'm at a loss. seems like every time I tried to weigh in, their detractors just got riled up and harassed them harder.

    I can't speak for others, but I don't post more about organizing and mutual aid because I don't know what organizing or mutual aid is working. The people I see talking about these things speak in broad platitudes - "support each other non-hierarchically," "build dual power" - but there's very little *actionable* to it. And that's because no one knows what works! If I knew what worked I'd never shut up about it. You'd be SICK of hearing from me! But I don't, and I think a lot of people feel similarly. I don't think things are hopeless, but people are gonna FEEL hopeless sometimes, and they're gonna talk about it. We can't fix the problem if we don't first acknowledge what the problems are and how we feel about them, and sometimes doing so is a way of asking for support.

  36. If Democrats are often centrist to appeal to moderate voters to win votes, then why don't Republicans appeal to the center (as the Autopsy Report suggested) in order to win votes?

    1. Their base is farther to the Right than the Democrats', and their right flank HATES moderation.

    2. Moving to the center is kind of a bullshit strategy that by and large doesn't work for Democrats. Biden is the first person who's campaigned on centrism to actually win in forty years. Because they GOVERNED as centrists, we forget that Clinton and Obama CAMPAIGNED as reformers, pitching themselves as to the left of the establishment. And they were remembered that way for years, until more progressive candidates followed them and threw their weaknesses into starker relief. Biden is the only liberal to CAMPAIGN as a centrist and win since Carter, and he only won because his opponent was the most hated President in decades.

    3. The liberals have a much LARGER base to rely on the conservatives. I imagine this puts liberals in a difficult spot, because they're trying to satisfy a much wider range of demands. Hence the wishy-washiness. The conservative base, by contrast, is shrinking, which is why they rely so heavily on gerrymandering and electoral college shenanigans to win. They have only taken the popular vote ONCE in thirty years! The average age of Republicans is getting older every year, moreso than Dems, and every young generation is more liberal than the last. Shearing votes off the liberals isn't going to work in the long run. Their strategy of just *breaking democracy* to ensure victory for themselves is proving much more successful.

    4. They just don't want to. The party is radicalizing because the people in it want it that way. Conservatism only ever has a tense relationship with democracy and rejecting it in favor of authoritarianism is the way it usually goes.

    I wish I had silver bullet answers to these, but it's more gonna be lists of best practices for all three. I have enough info on #1 and #2 to get started, though I'll be researching it as I write to find as much as I can. #3 can't be as all-encompassing as I'd like; it's constrained to "what, IN THE CURRENT SYSTEM, can we do to fight this?" How we fundamentally change the system to prevent this from happening so cyclically is too big a topic for a single video, and will be a guiding question of the next series I wanna do.

    More or less. I mean, it's worth clarifying that not all businesses want to do this, it's just that, in a market where success is determined by profit, maximizing profit by any means necessary is the optimal strategy. So, sure, many businesses will choose to behave ethically, but they will be outcompeted by those that don't, and the market still trends towards unethical behavior.

    I'm not sure about whether unpopular laws are harder to enforce, but I don't think that's a relevant question with abortion. Abortion is a service with an inelastic demand; making it illegal doesn't meaningfully affect how often it occurs. It really only affects how safe it is and whether you can go to jail for getting one. And people will more money always have access to them when they need them. Conservatives get abortions at similar rates to liberals, if I remember correctly, and they always think THEIR OWN abortion is justified, while still opposing them for other people. Illegalizing it will make it the same as it was before legalization: a dangerous process performed illicitly in hotel rooms.

I didn't mind the key-hunting and only occasionally disliked the maze-like levels. all that shit was good in my book and my only complaints were how some other retro shooters did it better. my issue was that the weapons were cool individually but didn't fit together into good combat.

    Ah! I illustrated that online reactionaries often have the affect of believing in nothing and just wanting to fuck with people, but that, in the end, they actually do have beliefs, and pretty far conservative ones at that, that they are simply masking behind a nihilist facade. To some extent, this masking is for their own benefit: they don't want to admit to themselves what they believe, so they tell themselves they're just messing with liberals because it's funny, and not because they are, themselves, conservatives.

    Wasn't making a statement about nihilism at large, just that a particular type of seeming-nihilism is just conservatives in denial.
