There's basically no hard evidence and very few vets reported their reception from peers in the US as unfriendly in a poll in 1971 commissioned by the VA. oh, um, take years of guitar lessons that you only half pay attention to and then live with a musician friend who explains it all to you again but it's interesting this time. at least, that's why I did.

but most of the time just listen to the drum beat and count where it repeats. most will go one two three four or one two three but sometimes you'll be like, "wait, this is doing something weird." and then you count along and realize, "oh! it's in seven!" or "oh! it's in five!"

for practice, listen to Little Sin by The Toadies to count in five and Push The Hand by The Toadies to count in seven (on the verses, the chorus is in normal old four-four)

I feel like I'm so vulnerable to misinformation about the Israel Gaza conflict and I don't really know what to do about it. The mainstream media has been both bad about covering this and intentionally hampered by Israel. I see all these terrible clips and statements from Twitter about Israel's actions, but I have no way to check if like 90% of it is true. A lot of it seems like it could be, but I don't want to accept potential misinformation just because it seems likely and agrees with my worldview. Maybe its not worth worrying about because the 10% that is easily verifiable is more than enough to understand Israel is doing an ethnic cleansing but idk...

Is this something you've thought about and do you have an ideas on ways to deal with or even mitigate it?

    Ian replied:

I'm lucky that most of my feeds are LARGELY filled with reliable information, and falsehoods tend to get found out and shared. with Israel in specific, the main thing is how much the IDF is revealing the crimes THEMSELVES, literally posting pictures of the children they murdered. they're BRAGGING about the cruelty.

if you're looking for a source, I have found AJ+ on Twitter to be pretty reliable. I've never learned anything they reported turned out to be false, and they make a point of covering things mainstream media ignores. obviously you should read widely, and AJ+ has biases same as any source, but their biases use facts as their starting point, not misinformation.

can the nazis really be categorised as white supremacist? They considered other white groups like Russians Poles Serbians on the same level as black people and other people of coluor on their racial hierarchy. Would it be more accurate to call them Aryan suprematists.

    Ian replied:

yes they were white supremacist because they considered Aryans to be the only true whites. race is already a made-up concept with no consistent logic, it is not hard to define it more narrowly when it suits your needs. even within whiteness, racists will establish a hierarchy.

in response to god you are such an asshole, I know because this was exactly the line of reasoning I had to train myself out of because it was what made everyone hate me throughout middle and high school and rightly so. basically the idea that what's right or wrong is situational and dependent on who is in charge. it's covert narcissism and it tells people not to trust you, because you will modify your values based on how you're feeling. there's no "harassment is wrong", there's just "harassment is only wrong if who's in charge says it's wrong, and right now i for once get to be in charge, so I will decide that I can do it". everyone can see that you're trying to tool on traumatized people to feel good about yourself and it's not really about saving babies or any of that. normal people can think the vietnam war is bad, some vietnam soldiers did some fucked up shit, but also know it's fucked up to call some random vet a babykiller unless he literally killed a baby intentionally and feels no remorse. and don't tell me that you meant only the ones who actually intentionally killed babies, we both know you didn't.

K, Ian, it’s time to let you in on how the real world works: if you’re a soldier and you disobey orders then you are going to likely get the absolute shit beaten out of you by your unit, brutally hazed, and/or quite possibly killed.

Are they just supposed to endure that because mOrALz? Hmmm? Go ahead, read me the “riot act.”

    Ian replied:

no, I get that that's a really complicated situation, but I still think, in a Telltale Games moral choice sense, that if you have to choose between killing multiple children and getting beat up, there's a pretty straightforward answer. and, like, the person who chooses to kill children is generally gonna be considered a coward, y'know?

also, like, the draft was shitty but not inescapable? my dad took a job as a teacher because teachers were exempt, as were several other professions. you could register as a conscientious objector. these weren't foolproof options, but c'mon, it's not like "flee the country or get beaten to death by your fellow soldiers" were the only options. most people who disobeyed orders got a dishonorable discharge and lost their pension.

you are correct, I didn't. I don't care if a Vietnam vet killed a baby by accident and feels bad about it. you take a job where "potential casualties: babies" is part of the description and people might take issue with that. I'm frankly amazed at the lengths you're going to frame "we shouldn't kill children" as a matter of opinion. less impressive is how you're framing "calling a person who killed babies a baby killer" as harassment. if you wanna talk about the Weathermen sending bomb threats to their houses, I'll condemn that as harassment. you're talking about NAMECALLING, you fucking wimp.

I dunno, depends on what "owners" means. I don't generally think the capitalist creation of the "owner class" is a good thing and would rather be done with it. I don't want "capitalism but all the businesses are co-ops," you know? I want to abolish the private sector.

but if "owner" means "in control of the means of production"? yeah, probably.

What overall societal movements and change in popular discourse did you think caused "bush did 9/11" to go from a fringe left belief to a fringe right belief?

    Ian replied:

very little, actually. conspiracism is about picking a conclusion you need to be true and grabbing whatever you need to reach that conclusion. if Bush needs to be the bad guy to justify conservatives' love of Trump? whatever, they don't need Bush anymore. they needed him back then, but now he's irrelevant. they'll accept Trump is an evil man the moment they don't him anymore.

what conservative cranks need is the belief that some authority is gonna "take their country back" and "set things right." Bush served that purpose once, Trump serves it now. liberal cranks need to believe that some technicality or insidious plot is the cause of all our problems and not just a bunch of entrenched and systemic awfulness; that the rules CAN save us so long as people enforce them. blaming Bush for 9/11 allowed for the possibility the whole war could be ended by one big reveal, or to blame widespread Islamophobia and warmongering on one mastermind instead of their own party's failings and the history of US imperialism. now it suits their purposes to rehabilitate Bush and act like he was a "proper, honest conservative" so they can spin Trumpists as deviant instead of the next logical step for conservatism.

the arguments themselves DO often reflect the beliefs people hold (e.g. conservatives often leaping to the fear of race war), but they don't ACTUALLY matter that much, and they'll gladly pinch an argument from the other side if it suits their needs.

    Ian replied:

the Left generally has problems of ignorance, where social minorities are not treated with respect, biases go unchecked, damaging assumptions are made, needs are misunderstood and left unaddressed. and the Left also has a subset of explicitly anti-social justice lefties who wanna be edgy and say slurs and insist anything other than class analysis is a distraction. antisemitism is a problem in both those spheres.

I would generally say that, of the blindspots and willful ignorances, antisemitism is not AS chronic a problem as transphobia, misogyny, and Islamophobia. those are things I see much more blatantly and explicitly these days. antisemitism is still an issue, but a nonzero amount of the "leftists and antisemitism" discourse I come across turns out to just be people defending Israel.

so: real problem! probably realer than I'm aware. but I'm not aware of it being one of our *serious* problems outside the minds of Israel apologists.

    Ian replied:

thematically, sure. I mean, it draws those allusions pretty directly, right? Spec Ops is doing the same thing with adapting Heart of Darkness to the modern war climate?

I think a noteworthy difference is Spec Ops is a critical darling but was a financial flop, where Apocalypse Now opened at #1. its box office total, adjusted for inflation, would be almost half a billion dollars. Spec Ops is not gonna have that cultural impact - not that many people actually played it.

How would one best make a game with the premise of "critique the player's actions taken within said game" anysuch? Spec's not first nor last I've heard talk of the issue, a certain Bastion and Wrecking Things comes to mind in fact, so I'm curious how best a game might critique the player for playing, seeing as I severely doubt there's any way in hell you or I or anyone will stop people from trying to do the deed.

in response to If the gameplay were enjoyable, would it ruin the deconstruction aspect of it?

    Ian replied:

I don't think it's possible to do without internal tensions, but tensions aren't necessarily bad. I don't think Spec Ops is a failure for having these contradictions. they're just worthy of mention.

in response to Is Spec Ops: The Line an effective deconstruction even when you're enjoying the gameplay?

    Ian replied:

I don't know about "ruin." I haven't played Spec Ops: The Line, I've only experienced it through the discourse. from what I have gathered, though (and people who've played it can tell me if I'm off-base), there is already a tension between its themes and its gameplay/plot. it's a critique of games that have you do war crimes, and is also a game that has you do war crimes. and, while that's part of the critique, it is still weird to serve up an example of what it hates, invite you to participate, and then tell you you should feel ashamed for playing it. that tension is core to the game existing at all; it kinda reads like the best way to make the critique would be to refuse to make the game, but, of course, it's a franchise; the owners are GOING to make that game, the gears of capital have demanded it, and if Yager refused the contract it would just go to someone else who'd make a normal-ass jingoistic version of it. so, yeah, at least THIS WAY there's a critique involved, but the critique is still "games like this should not exist; now pay us $60 for it."

I don't think the gameplay being more enjoyable would "ruin" it but would probably ratchet that tension up even higher. because if the game arguably shouldn't exist, it DEFINITELY shouldn't be fun!

    Ian replied:

I mean... I went vegetarian at 13 and was only just learning to cook properly when I went vegan at 20. so, like... whatever eating habits I have established myself instead of being decided by a parent or restaurant has been in the context of already being vegan. I would say the options for vegans have gotten better in that time, so I have a wider range of ways to feed myself, both healthily and otherwise. saying "I eat healthier as an adult" doesn't have much to do with veganism, it's more than I buy better produce than the canned shit my mom cooked, y'know? but I have a lot more options for desserts these days as well. so... meh?
