Hey Ian, not really a question but w/r/t your cornetto vid, it's great to see you making videos that you pretty obviously genuinely enjoyed creating.
Your other stuff has been super super important to me and my worldview, but the subject matter of some of those is kind of miserable and I know they can't be a total joy to make, so, props to you for making time for stuff you want to do! Go you!

    Ian replied:

this video was actually really grueling to make and involved three weeks of crunch while pushing through illness and multiple family/friend crises

Do you have a vegan cheat meal (a food thats not vegan but you love so much that you occasionally indulge yourself)?

    Ian replied:

not exactly. there are some foods that many vegans boycott that I have gotten lax with. I don't buy honey, but I don't refuse to eat it. I couldn't see the logic for people refusing gelatin but continuing to eat refined sugar, so when I stopped avoiding the the latter I did the same for the former. and I sometimes eat Indian food I know is vegetarian and just cross my fingers it isn't made with ghee.

but, like... your body CHANGES when you stop consuming animal products. it stops producing certain enzymes that used to help you break it down. I am extremely lactose intolerant and react very badly to eggs; even Impossible Meat, which is entirely vegan, gives me a stomachache, and I THINK it's the synthetic hemoglobin they use to make it convincingly "rare."

in short: a cheat day would make me very, very sick. about 20% of the reason I went vegan is I was sick of spending a day in the bathroom every time I ate cheese.

Why don’t you think we should be more worried about the growing influence of tankies?

in response to Does the left do too much infighting?

    Ian replied:

no one has actually demonstrated a growing influence. if you can show me that people doing actual organizing, mutual aid, and radical action are veering in a Marxist-Leninist direction, I will be worried. so far all I'm hearing is "there are more tankies in my feed than before."

one of the pitfalls of social media is we tend to think whatever discourse we are exposed to is a representative sampling of The Discourse at large. it's not. it is heavily curated to what an algorithm thinks you pay attention to. people keep telling me about the dangerous opinions of YouTubers whose work has never once cracked my feeds. I'm not saying they don't matter or that their arguments aren't harmful; I don't know which of us is in a bubble here! maybe the fact that they AREN'T in my feeds is weird. but that's why I tend to ask "hey, is this person ACTUALLY influential, or are they just loud enough to appear that way?"

I would actually be curious if anyone is studying the measurable impact of YouTubers and influencers on leftist movements, but, if that paper has been written, I haven't found the right phrase to punch into Google Scholar to turn it up. so, until then, just kinda have to check our experiences against each other, and judge whether a person is a problem for The Left and when they're just a thorn in your own paw.

In the process of gaining Whiteness, whatever made you not-White is expected to be obliterated. You are expected to be "one of the good ones" until such a time as the expectation that say... Italians are all poor and Catholic is not widely held. If you were poor, you'd better come into money. If you were Catholic, you'd better convert (or have a Vatican 2 or something). Being White and Italian is only "forgiven" if Whiteness needs to forgive the difference in order to persist. To Ian: Last hired - first fired wrt Whiteness is only true insofar as recently "enWhitened" groups are easier to create consensus expulsion for than Germans. If there was an equally convenient method by which to expel Germans from Whiteness, they would be. Whiteness is a political tool, and while there are definitely some folks out there working hard to maintain and define Whiteness, no one is actually protected from having their Whiteness cancelled.
