In it, you mention that a strong enough protest against the Provocateur would dissuade them from hosting the speaking engagement in the first place, beating them at their own power game. While I agree this is an effective method, is it not still weak to the whole “all publicity is good publicity” strategy? Just intuitively, it feels like the Provocateur’s end goal of “cause enough outrage that Fox News has to platform me and my awful ideas” is more than fulfilled by a thousand-people strong protest. While I understand that the point is to not play by their rules and refuse to accept their terms of “attention as a stake”, is there no middle ground? It seems like the Provocateur by his very existence forces the left into a compromising position, where we either let him spew hate and fuck with immigrants or give him the attention he’s chasing. Is there no way to win?

    I would say the idea that "all attention is good attention" is flawed. it is OFTEN true that controversy and attention are beneficial, but there are clearly TYPES of controversy, TYPES of attention, that are devastating to people on the Right, so it's worth looking at what those types are, and where different provocateurs are weak.

    in the case of Milo, it turns out that his career was almost entirely propped up by wealthy benefactors - the Mercers for a while before he got cut off, then Alex Macris after Matthew Mellon died - and the mix of press that was ACTUALLY BAD and his expensive lifestyle finally made him a liability. he was never ACTUALLY financially solvent for anyone, near as I can tell.

    so: for a person in Milo's situation, protests can be useful in part because they compel his benefactors to shell out for more security at his events (especially, you know, after one of his followers FUCKING SHOT A PROTESTOR). maybe that puts him in a lot of newspapers and gets more eyeballs on him and helps his brand, but it also makes schools aware of what a risk it can be to bring him on campus, and jacks up his speaking fee to cover the added security. the pedophilia scandal was bad press in particular because him being a gay man already meant he was viewed with suspicion by the Right, and they LOVE to push the "queers are dangerous to children" narrative (which Milo's transphobia had helped mainstream), so once that hit the news, it was a good time for his backers to dump him. he might have survived it if he was making them money, or even just costing them less, but the protests plus the bad press finally brought him down.

    there are no hard-and-fast rules here, because each provocateur is different. Richard Spencer got taken down by a few punches to the head, but that probably wouldn't work on Milo. and Spencer might be harder to take down with financial pressure because he has a think tank backing him, which might be more resilient than solo-patrons. (or maybe not, I dunno his institute's financials.) point is: none of them are fully immune to bad press, and most of them are only successful due very particular circumstances and vested interests. they do not have huge, broad support. they all have weaknesses.

I definitely think Folding Ideas could have made The Artist is Absent or maybe even This Is Phil Fish(not that he would have had the exact same arguments but they're the kind of video in his wheelhouse for me) but his Flat Earth video is the closest it comes to ARPB or Angry Jack and its a big gap still. I don't know any channel that has made anything particularly similar to Who Shot Guybrush Threepwood or Adventure Games About Jesus.

    In general I think the scope of topics you cover makes it hard to make connections but I do think Folding Ideas was probably the closest

Contrapoints is in a live-action production-quality war with Hbomb. Jacob Geller is generally clip-oriented (if that makes sense; Noah Caldwell Gervais falls into this category in my head even though his work is extremely long-form). Folding Ideas has become a documentarian. Breadsword is "what happens if you have a clip for every word?"

  15. When writing a script for a video, do you ever worry about toeing the line between citation and appeal to authority? I've noticed that some essayists lean heavily into quotes. It seems like the vast majority of quotations in the works I typically engage with are oriented towards "quotes as supporting evidence" rather than "quotes as jumping off points for engaging with the arguments." Not that the former is necessarily worse than the latter (or even that they're well-defined terms). But I have occasionally come away from a video essay thinking that I could've just read the work they were quoting from and gotten the same value. Do you have any thoughts there?

    personally, no, I don't worry about that because I don't use a ton of quotes. I don't read that fast and I'm weird about always needing to feel like I have a NEW idea, a NEW perspective, that I don't like relying on other people's writing. there are individual videos that come CLOSE to being adaptations of a specific work - Always a Bigger Fish hews fairly close to The Reactionary Mind - but it's still being applied to my specific area of study and is loaded with my own applications of the author's theories and personal observations.

    but, like, that's one reason I can't maintain a monthly schedule!

    I think you are correct that some people - especially with an academic background - rely a lot more heavily on sources because "original research" is frowned upon in some circles. but also sometimes you're putting stuff out in volume and rely heavily on a specific source. PhilosophyTube started out just summarizing ideas from her grad school readings at a way of making information accessible, and I think that's what a number of us are shooting for. we are in a position to just research at a volume people with dayjobs often can't, so sharing what we learn is valuable even if there's not a TON of personal spin.

    and sometimes someone has just already said a thing well, and you wanna shine a light on them with your big platform. I know that one documentary on the antivax movement got a HUGE boost from Hbomb's video, and that's a good thing. so sometimes we're trying to serve as a 101 on a subject and highlight where you should go for more.

    but, yeah, if you're trying to produce 30-60 minutes every MONTH, I think you're gonna spend more time pointing at books on the subject and less time synthesizing the information and adding your own perspective. economics make anything else hard.

    I dunno, his later plays that are kind of comedies and kind of romances and like of dramas just hit for me. I like reading Prospero as an author insert, the old magician begging his audience's pardon for one last indulgence, one last go-round. Caliban is not UNproblematic but there is SOME critique of colonialism in how he's written, and some just beautiful speeches. I dunno, it just hits a lot of the right buttons.

Maybe my definition is over-broad but I think anything made or curated with the intention of evoking a feeling in an audience is art. Video games all apply, warning labels can apply because they evoke fear or caution(or attempt to), textbooks vary but like...my american history textbooks certainly were trying to evoke nationalism or empathy at varying times, occasionally wonder. Microsoft Word as a whole is the least art thing as its a tool but it's not as if it's entirely function without consideration of form.

    But I also just don't think something being art or not is a value statement for me. It's a weird discussion to have when you could just instead discuss the form or intent or effectiveness at those things, to me.

I played Spiritfarer shortly after my dad died and it gave me FEELINGS. There are also games that I would say are not art (not BAD art, just not-art). Much the same way that not everything written down is art, but no one is trying to argue that Asimov or Wordsworth aren't. I think it's also worth noting that not everything that's written or recorded in other media is TRYING to be art. We also have, say, journalism. Likewise, I think there are games that have no intention of being art, but that doesn't diminish the artistic value of the games that are.

    I think any of those CAN be art, as Duchamp tried to demonstrate with the ReadiMades over a century ago: take a thing that is NOT meant to provoke an aesthetic response, put it in a gallery, and suddenly it DOES provoke an aesthetic response, even if that response is rejection. I think warning labels are generally not considered art solely because neither the people making them nor the ones consuming them are considering it in that context, but all they would have to do is think about it differently to become art.

    video games, though... I don't think the context in which people experience Call of Duty is meaningfully different from that of Passage; it's all aesthetics, even if the aesthetics are different.

    1) generally, if people are saying "defund" rather than "abolish," they are suggesting we keep the system but reduce its budget. most have a list of things they'd say we should cut first (let's start with the FUCKING TANKS). different people may have different ideas for what should be reduced and by how much, and there may even be entire departments they'd like cut, but BY AND LARGE it's not a radical overhaul of the concept, just the scope.

    2) I could also stand to read more about Israel, but my starting position is "Zionism is a very bad idea and we are currently seeing why," and it would take A LOT of convincing for me to consider that there's an ethical version of it.

    I agree with you - to a degree - on intentionality being part of what makes art art, but I don't see any rubric for why SOME games are art and others are not, since most games are made using similar processes and similar limitations. (by which I mean: Spiritfarer and Fortnite are far more similar to each other then either is to, like, a Goya painting.)

    there is writing that is not (primarily) art because it does not put itself in an artistic context. I wouldn't exclude journalism, necessarily, but, like... warning labels. signage. textbooks and homework assignments. a movie is art but is the description on the back of the Blu-Ray art?

    but I would say that's the difference between a video game and, like, Microsoft Word. software is to text what a video game is to a novel - the medium and the form.

    what makes games art has more to do with the CAPACITY to make you feel something, to have substance, to express something, than with whether a single game is successful at it, or even attempting it. I might even argue the pursuit of "mere" entertainment is still an artistic pursuit. it's just a generally derided one.

    that's a thing, but I've at least as often heard the reverse: games are NOT art and therefore not beholden to the same critical lenses as art; they are consumer products and should be tailored to the desires of the customer, not a means for artists to express themselves.

    more than anything, I think gamers wanna say "the jury's still out" on whether games are art, like they WANT it to be art SOMEDAY but for now we gotta keep arguing about it, and until it's settled they can still be entitled little shits about it.

    There's one strategy that I've been thinking has potential: Convince airline pilots and/or other airport workers to go on strike so as to shut down flights across the country, and keep them shut down until elected officials meet our demands. Withholding certain types of labor that the ruling class depend on can be a powerful technique.
