I guess that depends on the scenario here. are we talking about the SNAP program as it exists now? if it were expanded? is this part of a large-scale reconsideration of how we guarantee food to people, and the worry that, if food becomes too freely available, the market will collapse?

I guess what I'm asking is: in offering suggestions for how to manage inflation re: food stamps, how radical can my solutions be?

That probably would've been more satisfying, but I'm not convinced it would've worked as an ending. Like, "Violence creates more problems than it solves" is arguably one of the series' main themes. I'm not sure I would've bought the idea that the problem created by killing a bunch of people was solved by killing even more people.

in response to How would you have ended the John Wick movies, if you were given a blank check? I agree that the ending we got was a bit disappointing given the build-up of the previous installments, but part of why I was excited to see how it turned out was that I genuinely couldn't imagine what an endgame to that would look like.

    Ian replied:

I suppose that's a way of reading it, but I read it much more explicitly as "the rules that supposedly keep us civilized are, in practice, merely guidelines for whom we can be uncivilized towards, and the people treated with the most civility are the ones who write the rules; strict adherence to these rules WILL NOT guarantee you justice or liberty or even safety, as the system has no interest in any of these things, only in its own self-perpetuation; and if you seek justice outside of these rules, or even follow a one rule that forces you to break another, you will be eliminated if you cannot be brought to heel."

Chapter 3 leaves off on this note, with the implication that John is ready to reject the entire enterprise, which I was pretty hype about. so Chapter 4 ending with John's crafty strategy to game the rules into a win state (even at great personal cost) and leave the system standing feels like they chickened out. and they probably chickened out because they either cannot fathom actually taking the system down, or to keep the franchise running indefinitely.

various common languages and pidgins have arisen throughout history to serve this purpose, though never a full-on conlang, and never worldwide.

    4. None of the above?

in response to There's a decent argument to be made for voting third party in like Vermont, Hawaii, Wyoming, North Dakota, et al, I think. Like if you essentially know which way the state is going to go, then probably the best thing you can do with it is protest by picking what would be better, if it had a chance. Abstaining from voting only ever gets counted as disinterest, never as disapproval.

    Ian replied:

    5. winner-take-all elections will always trend towards two parties because more than two is systemically suboptimal. you would need to change the voting system to ranked choice or approval voting or runoff elections or SOMETHING under which multi-party elections are viable. until such time, a third party vote us entirely about your conscience and presents no meaningful threat to those in power.

For starters, there’s a difference between war crimes committed for the sole intent of genocide, and war crimes done to overthrow totalitarian regimes, like Saddam Hussein and Qaddafi.

in response to The only way you can believe this is if you think America’s foreign affairs have been evil for the last 80 years.

in response to [Diff Anon] Out of curiosity, what would you say to those of us who do live in states that are firmly red/blue (recommended actions, books on the subject, etc.)?

    Ian replied:

voting third party doesn't communicate anything meaningful either

I really doubt "supporting and giving financial aid to Indonesia while it committed atrocities", the main thing he cites for Ford and Carter, would be sufficient grounds for hanging by itself. Terms like "crime against peace" and "crime against humanity" are pretty broad and you could implicate a LOT of historical world leaders, not just presidents, if you were to prosecute as aggressively as Chomsky does.

in response to The only way you can believe this is if you think America’s foreign affairs have been evil for the last 80 years.

    Ian replied:

um, yeah. I don't think many world leaders would make it out of Nuremberg alive. Chomsky definitely doesn't.
