I used to think This Is Phil Fish was the biggest thing I would ever do. for YEARS nothing else I did came close to those numbers. but, eventually, my channel took off and now I have many videos way more popular. also videos that were kinda under the radar have suddenly gone big a couple years after the fact; We Don't Talk About Kenny is the second biggest video on my channel, and it used to be "the most popular of my unpopular videos."

  28. Phasma returning just felt…unnecessary for a movie as well planned as TLJ. It came out of nowhere with zero buildup. Like, how’d she survive the planet explosion in the previous film?

    I think she is seen escaping in TFA, but I could be wrong. I was assuming she'd be back.

    the scene works well enough for me because it's the moment Finn officially decides to be a rebel, and not simply work with the rebels to protect himself and his friends. Finn's arc in the last movie is about regaining his humanity, running from an oppressive regime, and finding human connection in Rey. TLJ reframes this, showing that, if Finn is primarily motivated by fear and loyalty to his chosen people over the wider community, then that's a kind of selfishness. his arc in this film is growing to care about more than himself and his personal connections, to extend that sense of humanity to people he doesn't know, to not just ESCAPE the First Order but actively OPPOSE them.

    Phasma functions as a personification of the First Order. he has escaped her, and then he captured and humiliated her, but he hasn't actually CONFRONTED her yet. so a one-on-one fight, where he full-throatedly accepts her label of "rebel scum," is making that arc very literal.

    it's actually a funny inverse to Poe's arc, in that Finn needs to go from a survivor to a fighter, and Poe needs to go from a fighter to a survivor. Finn chooses to fight the First Order, but his idea of what that looks like is the same as Poe's at the start of the movie: win at any cost. so he has to learn the lesson Poe is learning as well: that escaping to fight another day, saving as many lives as you can even if it hands you enemy a victory, is still a form of resistance. he kinda ends up full circle, once again escaping the First Order and protecting his people, but the definition of "his people" has been fundamentally redefined, and "escaping" is now about building a resistance instead of hiding.

    ...goddamn it's a great movie.

    yes and no.

    there are a lot of ways I think my relationship model would be treated with more respect if it were seen that way. I have extended family who don't take my life and relationships seriously, and if they applied the same lens they apply to queerness to it, they might feel more self-conscious about that, maybe make more of an effort. there are a lot of poly people who DO consider it an orientation, and feel it's a type of queerness, and I've had experiences that make me sympathetic to that argument. ("I dismissed your relationship til you had kids" is common to poly and queer people alike, for instance.)

    but, also... that's not how *I* experience polyamory. I don't see MY polyamory as an orientation, I see it as a choice. I think a lot more people could function polyamorously than we think. I think it is a valid choice, and should be respected even if it's NOT an innate characteristic that couldn't be changed. I don't see the part of my life where I was monogamous as having been "in the closet," I was just making a different choice that served different purposes. I'm happier now, but I wasn't denying an identity. similarly, for all we talk about "born this way," I think queerness would be valid even if it were a choice. if it came out that most people are far more sexually fluid than we think and most people COULD function as a different orientation if they chose to, I would want that choice respected. I'm not saying I think that's how people are, I'm saying there nothing wrong with queerness of any kind, and our ability to respect is shouldn't depend on it being innate.

    I'm not saying anyone who experiences polyamory as an orientation is WRONG, I just don't want to perform that experience to be treated as valid when it's not what I feel. I want my relationships to be respected because the are good and right for me, full stop.

    I'd rather take steps to prevent them from doing it in the first place, which mostly involves treating crime as a public health issue and addressing the root causes of crime.

    like, here's a thought experiment for you: let's say it's your job to work out the budgets for crime prevention AND punishment. and you look at the data and you see that every hundred dollars spent on prevention stops three crimes from happening, and every hundred spent on punishment stops one. how much money do you put into prevention, and how much do you put into punishment?

    I cannot justify putting a single dollar into punishment if all data says I will do more good putting that dollar into prevention. every dollar spent prosecuting, jailing, or executing criminals would be better spent on rehabilitation and social intervention. the numbers are a bit more complicated than "$100 prevents 3x as many crimes in prevention than punishment," but the overall trend holds: funding social workers and crisis counselors and addiction programs prevents more crime than retributive justice. and any money spent on the latter would be better spent on the former.

    if you are choosing punishment over prevention, it's not because it makes the world safer, it's because it makes you feel better. it's because you want criminals to suffer, and would rather live in a more dangerous world where you can at least get revenge when you're wronged than live in a better world where people who wrong you still get treated like human beings.

I've known at least a dozen women who MELT at a man who talks about his feelings, two dozen who swoon for a guy who knows how to cook, basically all of them for a guy who's good with kids. most LOVE the idea of a man who's fooled around with other men.

    like, go on Tumblr or AO3 and see which fictional men women are gaga for. BBC Sherlock and Draco Malfoy and bishi anime boys and every crying blond Evan Peters played on American Horror Story and the fucking Onceler. do you think Edward Cullen is the height of masculinity? do you know how FUCKING MOIST women are for Mr Darcy??? do you remember the Hot Ryu moment, when Street Fighter released an alternate costume for Ryu where he was shirtless and had a beard, and suddenly all these women were fantasizing not about getting RAILED by this musclebound hunk but about going to the farmer's market with a lumbersexual and then sipping cocoa by the fire?

(diff anon) To be honest, I think this is the biggest obstacle that a socialist society has to becoming realized - A lot of people do not want to give up the "right" to inflict suffering on those they deem worthy of it. I recognize this is not absolutely universal, as you point out that punitive justice does nothing for you. But I think a majority of people want intrinsically want to see the wicked suffer.

    It's not even really about justice, as a lot of unjust suffering has come from it, but the idea that people just have to give up on the idea that what they consider evil people will not suffer for their sins....maybe I'm wrong, but it seems so ingrained into the norms of society, it feels like it'd be like trying to make people give up alcohol, and we know how prohibition went.

    I don't think it's intrinsic, I think it's learned, but I agree it's a huge obstacle. the main tactic I use is that the punitive model doesn't even HAPPEN. if you've ever interacted with the justice system, you know full well that most people who do awful things get away with it, most of the ones that get caught never go to trial, those who do take years before seeing a judge, and what punishment they see has more to do with defendant demographics/which judge they happen to get/what lawyers they can afford. we have this image in our heads of what the punitive model is supposed to do: a speedy trial with a fair judge and an impartial jury. and we know, for a FACT, that the entire criminal justice system would fall apart if it tried to deliver that. so we get overworked public defenders, apathetic cops, biased juries, loads of plea bargains, and slow-as-molasses proceedings.

    so, like... set aside whether the punitive model WORKS or is MORAL - it's NEVER ACTUALLY EXISTED. it is completely unworkable. if you want justice in the form of punishment, you'd better hope the offender is a poor Black man or they'll never face any kind of judgement.
