What is your most irrational reason for disliking a piece of art?

    Ian replied:

several years ago I decided it was time to play Twilight Princess, which my then-girlfriend owned on Wii. but I couldn't play it on Wii. I had to play it on GameCube. the only way to play the GameCube, at that time, was at her apartment, using my CRT that I didn't have room for at my own apartment. also the CRT only had a coaxial input, so I had to plug the GameCube into an old, broken VCR that took RCA cables and could output to coax. also neither of us owned a copy of Twilight Princess on GameCube and they were hard to come by and very expensive. she finally got me one for my birthday after I'd spent the better part of a year trying to find one for a reasonable price; I don't wanna know how much it cost. so I could only play it a few hours at a time, at her place, using a Byzantine setup, the many pieces of which took nearly a year to get aligned.

why? because I insisted on a left-handed Link.

    Ian replied:

I think you mean Palestine, not the West Bank.

the fact that Israel has complete control of Palestine but Palestine does not have rights or representation is, yes, apartheid. Israeli Arabs are, primarily, Palestinians who applied for citizenship. that is the only way for Palestinians to have equal rights under the government that controls their water, electricity, and movements, and Israel intentionally approves very few for citizenship.

As a straight cis man have you ever struggled with feelings of shame for not living up to patriarchal standards of manhood & how did you overcome them?

    Ian replied:

it may shock you to hear that I was bullied from a young age. my experience was, from very early on, that patriarchy didn't want me. I was never, ever going to be an acceptable man. I was scrawny and nerdy and people assumed I would die a virgin. the first time girls ever started to notice me, it was when I did very non-masculine things like wear a Rainbow Brite hoodie and bleach my hair and paint my nails and wear colorful sunglasses.

I felt a lot of hurt over the way cis male culture treated me, but I don't think I ever felt SHAME for not being more manly. it wasn't something I had failed at, it was something I just WASN'T. it didn't seem like something I could even attempt.

I get that some people, when they're bullied, they wish that THEY could be the bullies, but I feel like it never occurred to me. maybe because it was clear that would never happen. (tho I was kind of a shit to the small handful of people lower in the pecking order than me, sometimes; I'm not pretending I was perfect.) but I didn't struggle with the whole "be a man" thing. if normative masculinity didn't want me, I didn't want it.

I’m surprised you went for the "motives are more important than results" route. You could beat them at their own game by saying that fascism started the deadliest conflict in history and the only industrialized genocide.

in response to You didn't offer a rebuttal. Why does "never again" apply to the Holocaust but not to the man-made famines that happen in socialist countries?

    Ian replied:

when genocide is the motive, that is the only result you can expect. the premise of this argument was implying that fascists could try to "avoid" genocide the way I recommended socialists try to avoid famines. but there will never be a fascist state interested in avoiding genocide; genocide is a primary means of maintaining fascism. genocide is in the best interest of fascists.

famines are not in the interest of socialists. genocide rallies fascists to the cause; famines turn people off of socialism. I am literally arguing with someone who is turned off of socialism by famines. a socialist state that has never had a famine would be held up as a prime example of socialism succeeding; a fascism without ethnic cleansing would be seen by fascists as an abject failure.

I'm all for consequentialism but use your fucking HEADS, people!

also I will gladly argue about whether famines are endemic to socialism as soon as someone provides evidence that famines happen at a higher incidence in socialist states than capitalist ones. seems like a question that keeps getting begged.

been unemployed for like a month now and it fucking sucks but it makes me think:

the awfulness of the job hunt: is it a feature of capitalism or a happy accident? obviously it’s good for capitalists if looking for work, and therefore being unemployed, is shameful and demeaning, but is it set up to be that way or is that just how the chips fell?

    Ian replied:

I would call it an emergent strategy.

though it's worth keeping in mind that capitalism falls apart if being unemployed ISN'T miserable, and the legal system takes steps to make sure unemployment is punished, and the Federal Reserve takes steps to ensure there is always a portion of the population out of work.

so the emergent strategy has been recognized and structurally enforced.

Would highly recommend you give it another shot! No shame in looking up where to go if you get stuck, especially with the Chozo artifacts you need to reach the final area.

    Ian replied:

fam, I'm a democratic socialist if I'm anything. I don't believe you really have either unless you have both.

(diff anon) Took 69 years for the soviet union to collapse and transition to a Market economy. I think "It is possible to change the system" isn't a great metric.

in response to New dealism is better than socialism give me your best argument against this.

    Ian replied:

even if the comparison were just "New Deal America versus the Soviet Union," the USSR has the New Deal beat by 29 years. but you're comparing New Dealism with all of socialism, and the USSR is the *only* example of a socialist state collapsing and reverting to capitalism.

I don't think you've set yourself up for success here.

You didn't offer a rebuttal. Why does "never again" apply to the Holocaust but not to the man-made famines that happen in socialist countries?

in response to "I would recommend any fascist movement look at the causes of the Holocaust and the Libyan genocide and avoid them"

    Ian replied:

it is not the goal of socialism to starve their own citizens. you do not recruit people to socialism by promising famines.

ethnic cleansing is the goal of fascism, and Hitler absolutely recruited people by promising to kill the Jews.

    you fucking dipshit.
