  14. You're maybe not the best person to turn for this but I remember you giving a very clear answer to this question previously which is sadly lost given CCs lack of search engine. As someone considering therapy for the first time what is in practice the difference between psychologist, therapist, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, etc?

    "therapist" is kind of an umbrella term that any of those p-words may call themselves interchangeably. the primary split is in whether you're looking for talk therapy or for medication; if you need a prescription for depression/anxiety/ADHD meds, you'll need a psychiatrist or psychopharmacologist. there will be some degree of talking involved there, as well; you might want a psychiatrist who will be your weekly talk therapist who also manages your meds, or you might just meet every 6 months to see how your meds are going and make adjustments. if you're seeking talking therapy in specific, you'll probably end up with a psychologist or a social worker - the primary difference between those two is in their education: they'll all be well-versed in therapy practices, but a psychologist probably studied human behavior and the history of psychoanalysis, where a social worker studied more about societal contexts. I've worked with both types of talk therapist in the past, and the differences are not IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS from a patient's perspective. (I know enough social workers in my personal life to be a little biased towards them; they come from a field that's very expressly about helping people, where pscyhologists can get a little egotistical about trailblazing some new modality... or maybe that's just gossip.)

    most of the folks I know in therapy (myself included) have a regular talk-therapist and then someone who manages meds that they see less frequently. a talk therapist or PCP can write you a referral for a psychopharm if they think meds are a good idea; they aren't gonna be "pill pushers" cuz they can't event write scripts themselves.

    from there, you might wanna look into modalities for what kind of therapy you think would benefit you. like, cognitive behavioral therapy is good for depression, psychodynamic is good for group therapy, I've been working with EFT therapists for a bit (Emotional-Focus Therapy), and IFS (internal family systems) is hokey but I've found it a really useful lens for the theatre kid in me. but, also, it's find to just find someone you vibe with, most people have familiarity with most modalities and fit is way more important than area of expertise.

    and there's just no comparison with the Dems of the Boom Years. Can you even imagine modern Dems passing something like the New Deal or the Civil Rights Act today?

    I suspect it's a perceptual bias that makes it look that way. for much of US history, gambling was illegal in the US, but the law did not extend to Native-owned land, so Native Americans were the only people who could open casinos. therefore, nearly all casinos were owned by Native Americans. kinda like Jewish bankers in medieval times.

    the overwhelming majority of Native Americans do not own casinos. it's just that, for casinos to exist at all, they must be owned by Native Americans.

    if revolutionary efforts get underway tomorrow, I will hit the books and decide what my specific -ism is, but, in the meantime, I am fiercely opposed to capitalism and lean towards democratic socialism, and that's enough for now.

    this is one of many reasons I advocate for a different system.

  66. From my understanding, the point of the video is to show how conservatism has always been a reactionary ideology that unholds the powerful since its inception. Virtually all modern conservative ideologies trace their origins back to Burke, who defended the monarchy (a backwards system of course) against liberal democracy (the progressive movement that we consider normal today). But just because Burke saw the French Revolution as repulsive doesn't mean that he saw every movement trying to make society fairer as negative, because otherwise he wouldn't have supported the American Revolution.

    That being said, I'm not the most well-read on Burke. Perhaps he just thought that the *British* crown specifically was bad and that a proper monarchy wouldn't have had the American colonies revolt, or something like that. But I don't think Burke thought that society had reached its end goal and nothing new could ever improve life.
