    two responses to this:

    a) so is monogamy! you just already know the contract in advance so you don't have to deliberate it. in absolute terms, poly "contracts" are no more or less constrained, but there are things you can do under them that are not in a monogs contract, if that's of interest to you.

    b) relationship anarchists exist, who do whatever whenever with whomever. some folks pull it off, but most folks find the contract-and-stipulations method, though a headache, lessens drama in the long run.

  40. So, I'm gonna preface this by saying that I'm a Ukrainian, so there's an obvious bias. But also I speak russian as one of my native languages and have friends who are or used to be russians, so that gives me a better insight into what's going on in there.
    Wrt lionization of the past, it is absolutely there. The most prominent and officially supported is the cult of victory(as in "we beat the nazis in WW2, which makes us the best people ever"). It might not be obvious from the western perspective, but it is extremely active and fairly ridiculous. But also there's the constant railing about the lands, that are "historically russian", the constant narrative of reclaiming everything and taking a bunch more. Hell, putin got his first major popularity boost by bombing the shit out of Chechnya and taking the land back into russia in a revanchist second Chechen War. And they are waging a genocidal, ethnically motivated war right now, as we speak.
    Wrt racism, yes, the state power is not explicitly built on demonizing a group, but the main line of the russian flavor of racism is gathering other (obviously inferior, as per their views) nations under the russian wing and slowly dissolving their cultures. The demonizing happens whenever those nations don't want to be absorbed. That's when the openly genocidal rhetoric comes out (and the genocidal actions, if they have the means to do them).
    Wrt power, I suppose you can say that there are no secondary structures, but why does he need them, when the entire state security apparatus belongs to him and does specifically what he says? Also, as one of the members of Duma said, "Duma is not the place for debate", which very clearly sums up, that the parliament is there only to rubber stamp whatever putin wants. So, once again, why does he need a secondary agency? Is it an absolutely necessary feature?
    Wrt the individual and the state. The rhetoric of dying for the state being a good and necessary thing was there for a long time, but ramped up significantly lately, because the massive combat losses need to be replenished somehow. They also have some militaristic youth movements, that are focused on "patriotic education".

    In general, the russians seem to utilize the language barrier quite well. The things they say in English are specifically aimed at the western audiences and are much tamer than what they say to their own people. Like, a couple of months ago, their human rights ombudsman mariia lvova-belova sat face to face with putin on the national tv, thanked him for making it easier to adopt Ukrainian children from the occupied territories and bragged about adopting a 15 y.o. boy from Mariupol. Does any of this make its way to the western audiences? Probably, but the reach is usually much more limited, compared to the official English language Twitter of some russian news outlet.

    I don't know a ton about Russia, but I don't know of any lionization of an idealized past or narrative of rebirth; racism is a major problem but the state hasn't built its power structure around demonizing a group along racial/ethnic lines; Putin has a lot of unchecked power but this is in the form of government agencies altering or ignoring the law, not secondary agencies that are openly unbound by the law and only follow the leader's prerogative; and the culture does not seem to be eradicating the boundary between individual and state.

    Putin seems like your run-of-the-mill authoritarian. though Trump never held as much power as Putin does, his mentality and following are much more explicitly fascist.

    but I'm open to being proved wrong about any of this.

    yes, though "unleash" is overstating things. historically, when fascism is mobilizing and liberals have the choice to either ally with the fascists or join with leftists in opposing fascism, they tend to freeze and do neither, refusing to ally with the Left even if it means the fash take over. in a few instances, they have allied with the fascists.

    they only seem to ally with leftists once the fascists are in power, and have a nasty habit of stabbing the leftists in the back once the fash are deposed. (or even before! shooting all the anarchists and ruining their chance of victory!)

    "unleashed" implies a level of control over the fascists that liberals simply don't have. fascists are the drivers of fascism, and liberals and conservatives can only decide what they want DO about this fascist groundswell. conservatives tend to hitch their wagons to it, liberals tend to waffle and hope it blows over. leftists tend to be the only real opposition, and libs/cons largely refuse to join with them.

  66. Would voting in social democrats and democratic socialists quell the American proletariat and make a revolution that could meaningfully change the system less likely? Under the current system which has been designed by the Bourgeoisie to cater to their interests, leftists in government can only make concessions to the working class; concessions that can easily be taken away, such as in the case of Roe v. Wade and the gutting of the Voting Rights act. I believe only a proletarian revolution can radically change the problematic constitutional principles that are deeply rooted in American society, such as the right to private property.

    that's the accelerationist argument. I don't cotton to accelerationism, myself. all the socialists and social democrats thought Obama was gonna make a big difference, but when he didn't we started Occupy, the largest protest movement in American history at the time, and then Black Lives Matter, the now-largest protest movement.

    while it's not impossible that a further left candidate could have sedated the Left, the only evidence I'm seeing implies the opposite.

    a studio whose business model and crunch culture ground talented people to dust making mediocre projects. but, in the instances where those people managed to flourish in spite of their conditions, they made three of the best adventures ever made (Walking Dead seasons 1 and 4, Tales from the Borderlands).
