    yes. I don't think Jemisin is saying this must be some kind of deputized force like it is in the story, I believe her point is that a just society can ONLY exist if people are willing to fight for it, and to know WHAT they are fighting.

    capitalism got to it. we passed the phase of "let's make this popular and ubiquitous" and transitioned into "let's extract value from this now that it's replaced its nearest competitors." like, Elon buys Twitter, says "gotta make this profitable," and that inevitably means more ads in your feed, more paywalled services, more assholes in the replies, more bullshit tricks to keep you on the site, more algorithms determining what you see instead of getting to choose for yourself. every single thing designed to make money makes the site worse. it's such a blatant indictment of capitalism, it's like something you would come up with as a thought experiment to explain why capitalism is bad.

    for anyone who doesn't know, "The Ones Who Stay and Fight" is an N.K. Jemisin short story that functions as a response to Ursula K. Le Guin's story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas."

    the premise of "Omelas" is that there is a utopian city where everyone is in complete joy at all times; it's a technical and architectural marvel and the people basically throw festivals every day. life is perfect. the price (and there are no explained mechanics for why this is the case) is that one person in Omelas - a small child - must live in abject misery, starved and abused in a dungeon. no one in Omelas can justify freeing the child, because it would end the joy for hundreds of thousands of others; you can't argue it would be a net gain. but some can't stomach living with that joy knowing the cost, so they just leave. they are the ones who walk away from Omelas.

    Jemisin's story is about a different utopia, Um-Helat, where everyone is free and happy and NO ONE suffers. the story's narrator challenges the reader, saying, in essence, "you're having trouble believing in this world, aren't you?" we have an easier time accepting a utopia if there is some sort of sinister cost. but, it turns out, this is a world where there is no oppression, no injustice, no one goes hungry or unhoused, there is no bigotry of any kind. and the narrator keeps insisting our own world is completely capable of being such a utopia.

    how Jemisin's society works is, if someone starts to get ideas about exerting power over others (primarily by using special technology to peer into other universes, e.g. our own, with its racism/sexism/ableism/classism), they are swiftly killed. the people who do this are the ones who stay and fight. (the narrator opines that the reader probably finds the utopia more believable once they learn it's maintained with violence.)

    to me, this is about the paradox of tolerance: if you want a tolerant society, you must not tolerate intolerance. because if someone says "my belief is that I should get to subjugate and exclude people for my own gain," and you allow that belief to remain, that person will create an intolerant society. it's like the story of the bartender and the nazi.     Omelas is justified oppression. the kinds of people who believe greatness has only ever been achieved through exploitation, that slavery or serfdom or capitalist value extraction are not only justified but NECESSARY to have anything worthwhile, believe in Omelas. and it's a very "well-meaning liberal" response to see that oppression and simply recuse yourself from it, conscientiously object, but do nothing to stop it.

    Jemisin says, you have to stop anyone who says they're going to build an Omelas, by any means necessary.

    I wouldn't call it copaganda because cops are very much the ones you stay and fight against.

I don’t think this is what the original questioner was talking about, but I have noticed a similar phenomenon among leftist online influencers where they seem to almost bully the audience at times, and especially liberals in the audience. I can understand much of their frustration with liberals, but it seems that a lot of the time in their videos seems to amount to yelling at liberals for their ignorance in leftist and sociological theory, and this seems counterproductive to me. I see a lot of content saying things to the effect of “If you really cared about (insert marginalized group here), you’d already know this.” I can see how it can like bullying someone who isn’t familiar with these spaces because, for all their many, many faults, liberals are much less likely to engage in violence against a marginalized person than reactionaries.

    To be clear, I don’t think you do this much in your videos, and in particular, I think “We go low, they go high” should be required viewing for any liberal. And also to be clear, I think most of these types of video offer essential perspectives for liberals, leftists, and apolitical people alike. I just feel that some people who need to be educated might be turned off by being yelled at for their ignorance.

    if we're talking about scolding liberals for not understanding/supporting/defending marginalized people, then, again, I think it's weird to call that "bullying" when you are advocating FOR a class of people under threat and criticizing the people who cause or allow that threat.

    I'll grant you it may not be the best way to change minds, but it is, again, punching up (or, in the case of privileged people chastising other privileged people, punching sideways).

    I don't much like the crushing fear of death I developed when I stopped believing in an afterlife. And there is a lot of community/ritual/moral inquiry I think atheists have failed to recreate outside of religion. So there are things I envy, yeah. But, overall, I think I'm a generally happier person since losing faith.

Autistic person here: sometimes a personality disorder, or the appearance of one, can mask neurotypes like autism, so it's important to find a therapist who can handle both, because different treatment modalities may be needed for each. It isn't uncommon for autism to be mistaken for a personality disorder, though a person can certainly have both (Sophie from Mars for instance has said she's both BPD and autistic)!

    this is very extremely documented. I've heard the arguments that it didn't happen, or it wasn't deliberate, and they are flimsy and wrong. genocide denialism is a bad look.

    talked to a my partner-who's-a-therapist and they said this:

    your three main avenues are a) find someone who specializes in your neurodivergence (a lot of therapy directories will let you search by specialty, and EVERYTHING has specialists), b) find someone who works in a modality that is known to be effective with your neurodivergence (e.g. talk therapies aren't always great for people on the autism spectrum as hyper-verbality is a common type of masking, so someone who works in *embodied* therapy is often more effective), and/or c) find someone who shares (or at least works with) your demographics (barring anything else, a Black woman therapist is more likely to take a Black woman client at her word).

    the more of these the better, but that's a rough order of priority. hopefully, between those three, you can find someone affordable.
