    Marx believed in the dietetic, that capitalism rose to address the contradictions in feudalism and that socialism was the thing to address the contradictions in capitalism. once the world was socialist, contradictions would inevitably arise and the next thing would come along to resolve them. capitalism is the one that believes it's where the cycle is supposed to end.

  26. I feel as though activists on the left aren't talking enough about what the left should actually be DOING to achieve our political goals. Meaning offline, organized direct action that leads to meaningful change. It's clear to me that the left needs to be establishing more accessible networks to facilitate activism for larger numbers of people, yet I don't see people talking about that on social media.

    We can't achieve our goals without more people involved.

    interesting that you see Reagan's breaking up of social programs as breaking up authority as opposed to simply moving the authority from one place to another, i.e. without social welfare workers were more reliant on their employers, functionally moving power from a democratic institution to a private one.

  45. Just curious, back when you were researching for your "white fascism" video, why did you choose specifically Roger Griffin's definition of fascism as "palingenetic ultranationalism", as it's just one of many (from Eco to Paxton etc.).

    Was it the predominant one in your literature? The one you found the most convincing? The one that best fitted your argument in the video? Or a different reason?

    Eco doesn't define fascism so much as describe several of its tenets. I hadn't yet read Paxton, though I have now, and I would say he rather deliberately doesn't offer a simple definition but instead tries to describe its characteristics deeply enough that you can recognize it, even if you can't offer a succinct definition. Griffin's definition felt like a good starting point because it packs a lot of central ideas in a couple of words. though, having read Paxton now, I think that video doesn't give as clear a view on what fascism is as I would like.

    the idea that humanity is "held back" is itself a Christian idea. humanity does not have a destination. there is no grand design we're supposed to fulfill. irrespective of spirituality, religion is a longstanding tradition of moral inquiry, philosophy, and communalism. I don't believe religions would have endured so long and in so many places if they didn't serve those necessary purposes, even if all their divine claims were 100% true. as an atheist, I have to get those needs met elsewhere, which is a slog because there isn't much tradition for them outside of religion.

    meanwhile, the cases made against religion tend to be pretty flimsy. religion has been used to justify horrible atrocities, but so have loads of other philosophies. religion is often pitted against science, but mostly only certain denominations of certain religions. "religion" is so broad that I can't see any claim that it is a problem that doesn't involve a lot of cherry-picking, and blaming "religion" for the problems we see means we're probably missing the actual issue, which is usually fundamentalism, authoritarianism, etc., all of which exist both within and without religious contexts.

    religion exists because it serves a function. I don't think those functions NEED to be served by religion, and I do not find religion convincing, but acting like it's some sort of problem is just lazy.
