  21. I’m fully in the “I don’t care camp” of the fate of the British monarchy, but do you know why so many leftists act like ending the monarchy would be such an important step to ending capitalism? I’ve seen a lot of leftists who have been celebrating her death and all the “Megxit”drama like it’s going to bring about the Revolution or something. America abolished its monarchy 247 years ago and we aren’t exactly anti-capitalist here. I mean the royal family is mostly just a bunch of spoiled elitists, but they aren’t anywhere near the most harmful people in the world, especially now with how much the UK has declined on the world stage.

    The incentives for politicians to mass-imprison and otherwise oppress minorities could still exist in a socialist democracy given enough ethnic hatred (idk, imagine India going socialist but the Hindu majority still exploiting democracy to persecute Muslims, as an arbitrary example)

    Meanwhile, cops are employees of the state, not a capitalist company, and if they exist in the above context, the same toxic pattern could emerge, could it not? The Hindu majority in a demsoc India could democratically withhold access to lawyers from religious minorities, leaving cops to terrorize those same minorities out of convenience

    I find it easy to imagine a democratic socialist country that still has those two problems, given enough ethnic hatred

    sure, but the question wasn't "can these things only happen under capitalism," but "how are capitalism and racism intertwined?" racism creates the wealth disparity between white people and people of color, and funnels POC into low-income communities, which are where cops go when they want to harass someone who can't afford a lawyer. politicians are competing for votes so they take advantage of these economic disparities to suppress people who would vote against them and cater to the part of their constituency that can afford large donations, which, because of racism, are predominantly white. these are all class issues.

    I'm not one of these people who believes racism is a result of capitalism (not least because racism predates capitalism by a few centuries). but capitalism is one of the languages racism expresses itself - every racial issue not created by capitalism is exacerbated by it.

    ending capitalism won't end racism, but they are so interconnected you can't effectively fight one without fighting both. you can't address racism without addressing the role class plays in it.

There are hundreds of examples of businesses that claim, in periods of prosperity, that they prefer to do what is right over what is profitable. But what tune do they play when prosperity ends? Every boom has a bust - since 1900, the US has spent one out of every four years in recession. And, in the lean season, not using this generations-old system built by white people to advantage their descendants is a liability. A values-based business typically goes one of three ways: compromising their values to stay competitive, getting bought by someone who compromised their values to stay competitive, or sticking to their guns and facing a higher risk of going out of business. Many choose to do the right thing, and some even survive. But that’s beating the odds. The market trends toward the optimal strategy.

    I wouldn't be qualified to say. generally, if there's a revolution in a country where the church has a lot of power, the new regime has to contend with it. some try to get the church on their side, some at least reach a kind of non-aggression agreement with it. it would make sense if those that can't manage either would take an oppositional stance, but that's guesswork in my part.

    I don't have a complete timeline on hand, but, as soon as it was legal anywhere, it was more or less inevitable that it would end up at the Supreme Court to demand why married couples have rights in some states but not others. So Republicans kept trying to overturn it anywhere it was legalized, and kept trying to enshrine it in federal law, but they couldn't pull it off. it went to the Supreme Court before they'd fully stacked it with homophobes and it became the law of the land.

    in studying the science of debate, there's a very reliable phenomenon: if the person you're rooting for in the debate says something you disagree with, you are more likely to update your beliefs to match what they said than lose respect for them.

    Bernie was their home team, so anything he does is rationalized as ok, anything he fails at doesn't matter. it's the same thing libs do with their centrist candidates - Biden staked his campaign on fighting COVID but his defenders never hesitate to tell you why his inability to do so - and eventual abandonment of the goal - is perfectly sensible, unavoidable even.
