Value does not appear intrinsically and instead arises contextually from person to person and your premises also ignore the existence of consent. Y'all completely failed at tying economics to ontology, what do you have to say for yourselves?

    Ian replied:

Hi! This isn't in reply to any specific post and these statements are kinda vague. If you'd like to me to reply to the substance of your argument, would you mind elaborating on it? Consent and the contextual nature of value both get pretty complicated when you put them in a market, so I'd need to know how you're employing them. :)

i'm certain you get questions like this all the time since i imagine most vegans get questions like them all the time but i don't have any vegan friends so i've not really got anyone to ask. i'm asking not to denigrate or poke holes in your reasoning, but to get an idea of where you stand and where you come from on being vegan, since you tend to give level and reasonable arguments for almost everything people ask you about here.

why exactly are you a vegan? is your objection to eating animal products ethical, moral, political, or environmental?
    do you eat honey?
i keep a few chickens for their eggs. they're all happy and healthy. would you be comfortable eating their eggs?

do you have a favorite vegan version of a typically non-vegan dish?

    Ian replied:

I am vegan for moral reasons. no animal needs to die or suffer for me to live, so I cannot justify eating products of their suffering. I used to be more dogmatic about the boundaries of my veganism: no gelatin, no refined sugar, no honey, etc. I've gotten less so in the last few years, so, while I don't buy or cook with honey, I will occasionally eat something with honey in it if there's nothing else around.

I wouldn't eat the eggs from your chickens because, at this point, they would give me the shits. but I don't morally object to you eating them!

I have many favorite veganized dishes! the jerk seitan in Vegan with a Vengeance by Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a staple in my house.

in response to You've conveniently overlooked the part that height is highly correlated with birth sex, which is the irrefutable kind of example you asked for; the point being that we should make arguments that can't be invalidated just by pointing out actual facts

    Ian replied:

I deliberately keep my audience on this platform small so I can, with a degree of safety, have these kinds of arguments without spreading the BS very far. these are the kinds of people I can't speak to very often, and this is a *somewhat* safer environment to do it, where I have a decent amount of control over what gets seen (there is more overtly transphobic stuff in my inbox that I simply delete). I don't know how productive any of this is - I doubt it's convincing the people I'm arguing with, and I don't know that these are arguments my own side needs to hear, but it can possibly plant a seed and can sometimes illuminate how the other side thinks.

it's probably a waste of time and just me venting about transphobia, so maybe I should stop.

in response to Do you mind that trans women have a competitive advantage over cis women or do you think they need to stop being snowflakes about it?

    Ian replied:

see, if you'd looked for a citation, you would've found that, actually, most sports start out without gendered separation, and then get split when women start playing and are better than expected and men feel emasculated by that fact, so they give them their own league (or, more often, bar them from the sport entirely at first until outcry forces them to make a separate league). you just upheld sexism in your attempt to be transphobic, as is usually the case.

Chapo Trap House did an episode (478 - World Tree Center) challenging the point that it was a white savior narrative. I can't say I was entirely convinced but if I recall correctly they compared it to other uses of the white savior trope to illustrate how it was qualitatively different. IIRC a big part of it was that Jake abandons any privilege he could have in that situation by even surrendering his humanity, whereas many white savior stories allow the main character to preserve their whiteness, connections to colonial powers and "specialness" over the people they save. If anything, if you take it as a real world parallel, it was as close to a portrayal of the suicide of one's whiteness as a movie can get.

That's just what I remember. And again, I'm not entirely sold (and even if I was convinced it wouldn't make me like the movie) but I still found it interesting food for thought.

Why do some people say men can’t be feminists, only feminist allies? (This is not a terf thing afaict)

in response to Would you call yourself a feminist?

    Ian replied:

I haven't heard that particular argument so I can't say.

Myself, I used to claim "ally" because "feminist" felt presumptive. Like, there is both the ideology of feminism - that women are equal peers to men and deserving of the same rights - and the feminist movement - the effort to bring those conditions about. The word "feminist" can apply to either, and, while I'm definitely the first, I thought claiming the second was, I dunno, cocky? Appropriative? I'm not exactly "part of the movement" just because I talk about feminism on YouTube sometimes. So I went with "ally" because implying I'm a cheerleader seemed more accurate.

But then that started to feel weird. I mean, who gets to declare themselves an ally? Like, the US didn't enter the Allied Powers in World War 2 by saying "we're allies!" You've gotta sign a treaty, contribute to the war effort, put skin in the game. People have to accept your offer of allyship, you can't just announce it unilaterally.

So I decided I was being stubborn and just embraced "feminist" and tried to commit better to being part of the movement in whatever ways I can.

This may change again, politics are always a work in progress, but I try to be thoughtful about my labels.

What person or group would you like a good biopic to be made about?

    Ian replied:

a while ago I came up with the idea of doing a "print the legend" biopic about Aphex Twin, where it's a series of shorts treating the various lies told about him/that he's told about himself (e.g. that he sleeps 90 minutes a night, once blew up an abandoned car with the turret on his armored vehicle, that the D in Richard D. James stands for Dick and his full name is Richard Richard James) as true

    Ian replied:

despite its dodgy politics, Avatar was a fun ride, like Space Mountain or something. it was entirely forgettable once the ride was over and I don't imagine the 14 sequels are gonna be very impressive nowadays.

I played a bit of the first one but got kinda lost in the enormous map. I got the full duology in the Boomer Shooter Bundle so I may dip back into it eventually.

have you read the short story/sequel to the City in the Middle of the Night? thoughts?

    Ian replied:

I have! I like it. having Alex be the POV for a bit was good, she was always a bit of a mystery in the book. I continue to love how all this wild-ass sci-fi shit is always the backdrop to character development; you're legit never gonna know what happens with the future of this planet and all that, the story is over when the character reaches a personal culmination.

Ok they put shadow in the post credits of Sonic 2. What critically acclaimed A-lister do you think they're gonna have do the voice of shadow the goddamn hedgehog

    Ian replied:

I would've said Idris if they hadn't already used him for Knuckles. ugh, it's probably just gonna be Chris Pratt.
