    I've seen all of Breaking Bad, am a season or so behind on Better Call Saul. Breaking Bad is a bit uneven, but when it shines (first half of season 3, all of season 5) it's incredible. Better Call Saul is fascinating in that I'm not quite sure why it exists yet it's extremely watchable. Good writing, great characters, and a much slower, less bombastic meditation on how people choose to become bad people. Could never exist if it weren't attached to a bigger hit, but it's cool that it does.

    I was thinking of doing a CO-VID about El Camino and the end of Breaking Bad, but I never got around to it. Maybe I'll do that someday.

    it's about a species with a very unique kind of language that makes it incredibly difficult for humans to communicate with them, the colony of humans who live on their planet, and the odd interactions between these two very different cultures. then a language-based crisis happens and the system as it is in changed forever and the human characters have to scramble to find a solution.

    okay, let's start with the premise that money represents "value." that's the idea behind currency. the total amount of currency in circulation represents the total amount of "value" in the market. that "value" can be goods (smartphones, roller skates, hunks of gold) or services (i.e. labor).

    now. what happens when you add "value" to this system? as in, what happens when you discover a giant nugget of gold, or when young people grow up and enter the workforce? when new goods and labor enter the market, does the amount of money go up to represent that added "value?"

    fuck no! the "value" of the goods and services goes DOWN because they are competing for the same amount of money. if you double the amount of gold in circulation, it deflates the value of gold. if more workers enter the field, wages drop because employers have more leverage. and what happens when you print more money? does it make the money commensurate with the amount of goods and labor? fuck no again! you get inflation - *the "value" of the money goes down*.

    the answer to your question is that the hunk of gold may add goods to the market, but it doesn't add "value" because the amount of money in circulation stays the same. but the bigger takeaway is this: "value" doesn't represent the amount of goods and labor, and nor does money. both are based on some nebulous concept of "value" that is static. increase the goods and labor, and their "value" deflates. increase the amount of currency, and it's "value" deflates. capitalism is based on a finite amount of "value." that's the whole argument behind NFTs - capitalists love NFTs because it finally adds scarcity to endlessly reproducible JPEGs. you can't have a market until you have a way of controlling and limiting the concept of "value."

    yeah, that there's something valuable or even beautiful about the tension between democratic collectivism and capitalistic wealth generation. I just want it on record that capitalism does not "generate wealth to distribute," you only "generate wealth" by moving money from the many to the few. it's not like entrepreneurs make some fabulous company and the Federal Reserve goes "oh, better print a bunch more money to recognize all this new value!" they get money because other people lose money. that's capitalism. the money is already there, you can already distribute it, you don't need rich people to serve as middlemen!

I'm ambivalent about MI2 and didn't really like Thimbleweed Park, and Ron's metatextual streak has worn out it's welcome for me. But, like it or hate it, I think it'll be interesting!

    Now, if he could just get Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman to co-write it with him...

    -To your second, the state preventing women from participating in *this* type of labor is no more patriarchal than the state prohibiting the sale of hard drugs.

There's an argument to be made that such a practice is inherently at odds with Marxist feminism. There's also an argument that the norms that make sex work coercive and patriarchal are inherent to the practice itself.

    depends! most Marxist frameworks still use currency to some degree, but some don't. I wouldn't yet say I favor abolishing money, but I've been warming on the idea of late. I have a collection of essays on the subject I wanna read when I finish ARPB.
